አስር ኢትዮጵያውያን ዜጎች በህገ-ወጥ መንገድ የዛምቤዚ ወንዝን ወደ ቦትስዋና ለመሻገር በተጠቀሙበት ታንኳ መስጠማቸውን ተከትሎ መስጠማቸውን ጠቁመዋል። በካዙንጉላ አውራጃ ዋና ሴኩቴ ዋና ከተማ አቅራቢያ በሚገኘው የምዋንጋ መንደር አቅራቢያ ታንኳ ተገልብጧል።

የዛምቢያ ፖሊስ አገልግሎት እና የኢሚግሬሽን መምሪያ በጋራ ባወጡት መግለጫ መሠረት፣ ሰኞ ምሽት ፲፭/15 ኢትዮጵያውያን ዜጎች ወንዙን ለመሻገር ሲሞክሩ ድርጊቱ ተከስቷል።

ባለስልጣናቱ እንዳሉት ሁለት ኢትዮጵያውያን ዜጎች እርዳታ ለማግኘት ከወንዙ ከወጡ በኋላ የህዝቡ አባላት የኢሚግሬሽን መኮንኖችን አሳውቀዋል።

ሁለቱ የኢሚግሬሽን ሰነዶች ሳይኖሩ የተገኙት የ፴፫/33 ዓመቱ መንግስቱ ጌታቸው አሬንጋ እና የ፴፭/35 ዓመቱ አኔቦ ማዳሞ ደመቀ የተባሉ ሲሆን ፓስፖርት ይዞ የነበረ ቢሆንም ወደ ዛምቢያ ሲገባ ለኢሚግሬሽን ባለስልጣናት ሪፖርት ማድረግ አልቻለም።

የተረፉት ሰዎች ታንኳው ወንዙን ሲያቋርጥ እንደተገለበጠ ለባለስልጣናት ተናግረዋል።

እንደ ዘገባቸው ከሆነ አምስት ሰዎች ወደ ዋኝተው ወደ ዋሻ መግባታቸው ተረጋግጧል፤ ሌሎች 10 ደግሞ መስጠማቸው ተነግሯል። ሆኖም ከተዘገቡት የተረፉ ሰዎች መካከል ሦስቱ የት እንዳሉ እስካሁን አልታወቀም።

ከክስተቱ በኋላ የፖሊስ እና የኢሚግሬሽን መኮንኖች የዛምቢያ ጦር ልዩ ኃይሎችን፣ የዛምቢያ ፖሊስ የባህር ኃይል ክፍልን እና የእሳት አደጋ መከላከያ እና የማዳን አገልግሎቶችን ያካተተ የፍለጋ እና የማዳን ዘመቻ ጀምረዋል።

ባለስልጣናቱ ተጠርጣሪ ተጎጂዎችን ለማግኘት፣ የጠፉትን በሕይወት የተረፉ ሰዎችን ለመከታተል እና ከክስተቱ ጋር የተያያዙ ሁኔታዎችን ለማጣራት ዘመቻው ቀጥሏል ብለዋል።

የጋራ መግለጫው በታተመበት ጊዜ ምንም አስከሬን እንዳልተገኘ ጠቅሷል፤ የ፲/10ሩ ግለሰቦች ሰምጠው የሞቱት ሰዎች የፍለጋ ስራው ውጤት እስኪጠናቀቅ ድረስ እስካሁን ድረስ እንዳልተረጋገጠ አክሎ ገልጿል።

ይህ በእንዲህ እንዳለ ሁለቱ ኢትዮጵያዊያን በፖሊስ ቁጥጥር ስር ውለዋል፤ እንዲሁም በኢሚግሬሽን ጥፋቶች ምክንያት እየተፈተሹ ነው።

Ten Ethiopian nationals are feared to have drowned after a canoe they were using to illegally cross the Zambezi River into Botswana capsized near Mwaanga Village in Chief Sekute’s Chiefdom of Kazungula District.

According to a joint statement by the Zambia Police Service and the Department of Immigration, the incident occurred on Monday night when a group of 15 Ethiopian nationals attempted to cross the river.

Authorities said members of the public alerted immigration officers after two Ethiopian nationals emerged from the river seeking assistance.

The two were identified as Menigstu Getachew Arenga, 33, who was found without immigration documents, and Anebo Madamo Demeke, 35, who was in possession of a passport but had failed to report to immigration authorities upon entering Zambia.

The survivors told authorities that the canoe overturned while the group was crossing the river.

According to their account, five people managed to swim to safety, while 10 others are believed to have drowned. However, the whereabouts of three of the reported survivors remain unknown.

Following the incident, police and immigration officers launched a search and rescue operation involving the Zambia Army Marine Special Forces, the Zambia Police Marine Unit, and the Fire Brigade and Rescue Services.

Authorities said the operation is ongoing to locate the suspected victims, trace the missing survivors and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The joint statement noted that no bodies had been recovered at the time of publication, adding that the reported drowning of the 10 individuals remains unconfirmed pending the outcome of the search operation.

Meanwhile, the two Ethiopian nationals are in police custody assisting with investigations and are also being processed for alleged immigration offences.

The Zambia Police Service and the Department of Immigration have appealed to members of the public, particularly those living in border communities, to report suspected cases of illegal border crossings and human smuggling activities.

ብዙ ኢትዮጵያውያን ወደ ባህር ዳር በሚደረገው አሰቃቂ ጉዞ በሕይወት አይተርፉም።

በጀልባዋ ላይ በ2022 ከደም አፋሳሽ ጦርነት የወጣው ያልተረጋጋ ክልል ከትግራይ የሸሸችው የሃያ/20 ዓመቷ ዜናብ ገብረክርስቶስ ነበረች።

አርባ/40 በመቶው ከድህነት ወለል በታች በሚኖርባት ሀገር ለኮንትሮባንድ ሃምሳ ሺህ ብር/50,000 (ሦስት መቶ ሃያ/320 ዶላር) ከፍተኛ ገንዘብ ከፈለች። በመንገድ ላይ ገንዘቧን እና ስልኳን ተዘርፋለች፣ ከዚያም በጅቡቲ የባህር ዳርቻ "ያለ ምግብ እና ውሃ -- በረሃ ብቻ" ለሦስት ቀናት መጠበቅ ነበረባት።

እ.ኤ.አ. መጋቢት 24 ቀን ምሽት ላይ ህገወጥ አዘዋዋሪዎች ሦስት መቶ ሃያ/320 ሰዎችን በአንድ ትንሽ ጀልባ ላይ አጨናንቀው በመጫን በፍጥነት ማስጠም ጀመሩ።

ኦቦክ በሚገኘው በአይ.ኦ.ኤም የሚተዳደረው ማዕከል ተናግራለች “ብዙ ሰዎች አይናችን እያየ ሞተዋል -- ጓደኞች እና የቤተሰብ አባላት። " እንዴት መውረድ እንደቻልኩ እንኳን አላስታውስም።"

- በአሸዋ ውስጥ ያሉ አካላት -

በጌሄር ባህር ዳርቻ፣ ከኦቦክ በስተሰሜን ያለው መደበኛ የመነሻ ነጥብ፣ አልባሳት፣ ፍሎፕ እና ጫማዎች አሸዋውን ያኖራሉ።

የዩሱፍ ሙሳ መሀመድ የአይ.ኦ.ኤም ኦቦክ ፅህፈት ቤት ኃላፊ በባህር ዳርቻው ላይ ሁለት የጅምላ መቃብሮችን ጠቁመው ሌሎች በአቅራቢያው እንዳሉም ተናግረዋል።

"ከሁለት/200 በላይ አስከሬኖች እዚህ አካባቢ ተቀብረዋል" ብሏል።

በእነዚህ ቀናት በኦቦክ የመቃብር ቦታ ለመጠቀም ፈቃድ አላቸው። የመንገዱን አስፈሪነት በደርዘን የሚቆጠሩ ተጨማሪ ያልተለዩ መቃብሮች ይመሰክራሉ።

በኦቦክ የመቃብር ቦታ ላይ የማይታወቁ የስደተኞች መቃብር

የሱፍ ካጋጠማቸው ስደተኞች ዘጠና ስምንት/98 በመቶ ያህሉ ኢትዮጵያውያን ናቸው። ወደብ ከሌለው አገር የመጡት አብዛኞቹ ለመሻገር ከመሞከራቸው በፊት ባሕሩን አይተውት እንኳን አያውቁም።

በሰኔ እና በነሀሴ መካከል የሙቀት መጠኑ ወደ አርባ አምስት/45 ሴ. አንዳንዶች በተስፋ መቁረጥ ውስጥ የራሳቸውን ሕይወት ያጠፋሉ።

ባለፈው ሞቃታማ ወቅት በወር ወደ ሃያ/20 የሚጠጉ አስከሬኖችን አግኝተናል ሲል የሱፍ ተናግሯል።

የጅቡቲ የባህር ጠረፍ ጠባቂዎች በአብዛኛው የመን በሕገወጥ አዘዋዋሪዎች ላይ የሚጠብቀውን ጥበቃ የጨመረ ሲሆን የተያዙ አስራ ሁለት/12 ጀልባዎች ውጭ ቆመው ነበር።

ነገር ግን በየቀኑ ከሁለት መቶ/200 እስከ ሦስት መቶ/300 የሚደርሱ ስደተኞች ኦቦክ ሲደርሱ የባህር ዳርቻ ጠባቂዎች እና አይ.ኦ.ኤም መቋቋም አይችሉም።

"እያንዳንዱ አመት ካለፈው የበለጠ ገዳይ ነው" ሲል የሱፍ ተናግሯል። "እና ለምን ያህል ጊዜ እንደሚቀጥል አናውቅም።" ይላል።

- በመንገድ ላይ የተተወ -

የሰላሳ/30 ዓመቷ ገነት ገብረመስቀል ገብረማርያም በትግራይ በግብርና ሰራተኛነት በየቀኑ የምታገኘውን ከአንድ/1 እስከ ሁለት/2 ዶላር ለአራት ልጆቿ እና እናቷ ማሟላት አልቻለችም።

በረሃውን አቋርጣ በደርዘን ከሚቆጠሩ ሰዎች ጋር በእግሯ ገደል ገባች።

"የደከመውን ወይም የወደቀውን ማንም አያነሳም፤ ወደ ኋላ ይተዋቸዋል። ከኋላው በዱላ እየተደበደብን እንደ ወታደር እንድንዘምት ተገደናል። ብዙ ሴቶች በውሃ ጥምና በረሃብ ደክመው በረሃ ቀርተዋል" ትላለች ገነት።

በጣም ከብዷት ነበር እና ወደ ኋላ ለመመለስ ወሰነች።

ባለፈው አመት ከምስራቃዊ መስመር ከዘጠኝ መቶ/900 በላይ ሰዎች ሞተዋል ይህም በተመዘገበው እጅግ ገዳዩ ነው።

"የቀን ስራም ይሁን የቤት ስራ ከዚህ ስቃይ የቀድሞ ህይወቴ ይሻላል" ትላለች።

ሌሎች ደግሞ ተስፋ ለመቁረጥ በጣም ይፈልጋሉ።

ከምዕራብ ኢትዮጵያ የአስራ ዘጠኝ/19 አመቱ ሙአዝ አባሮጌ አሁንም ሳውዲ አረቢያ የመድረስ ተስፋ ነበረው።

ወደ ኦቦክ በሚወስደው መንገድ ላይ ለኤኤፍፒ እንደተናገረው "ይህ የሚያስፈራ ነው፣ ነገር ግን ሌላ አማራጭ የለኝም" ሲል ተናግሯል።

Their faces drawn, their bodies emaciated, some had not eaten in days. A few withered acacia trees offer the only occasional shade in Djibouti's April "winter", when temperatures still hit 35C.

Jemal Ibrahim Hassan hoped to find work in one of the wealthy Gulf monarchies by travelling from Djibouti on the Horn of Africa to Yemen across the narrow but deadly Bab-el-Mandab Strait.

Like the vast majority of migrants, Hassan comes from neighbouring Ethiopia, a country of 130 million people beset by entrenched poverty and multiple armed conflicts.

"We had no place to stay in peace," said the 25-year-old former farmer when AFP met him in northern Djibouti.

Djibouti coastguard commander Ismail Hassan Dirieh with one of the boats seized from smugglers.

He walked for 15 days, covering some 550 kilometres (340 miles), his feet "swollen and blistered", before boarding an overcrowded boat. But it was stopped by the coastguard and he ended up in a Yemeni detention centre.

"There was no food, nothing. We stayed there for eight days and they brought us back," he said.

Jemal almost died when a storm struck on the return journey, and was now walking again, this time back to Ethiopia.

- Deadliest on record -

Tens of thousands of migrants brave this so-called Eastern Route each year, most leaving from Djibouti, which lies just 30 kilometres from Yemen at the closest point.

More than 900 died or disappeared along the route in 2025 -- the deadliest year on record, according to the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The latest shipwreck in late March left at least nine dead and 45 missing when a boat capsized near Obock.

Many Ethiopians do not survive the gruelling trek to the coast

On board was Zinab Gebrekristos, 20, who fled Tigray in northern Ethiopia, an unstable region that emerged from a bloody war in 2022.

She paid a smuggler 50,000 birr ($320), a huge sum in a country where 40 percent live below the poverty line. She was robbed of her money and phone en route, and then had to wait three days on the Djibouti coast "without food or water -- just the desert".

On the evening of March 24, the smugglers crammed 320 people onto a small boat, which quickly began to sink.

"Many people died right in front of our eyes -- friends and family members," said Zinab, speaking at an IOM-run centre in Obock. "I can't even remember how I managed to get off."

- Bodies in the sand -

At Gehere beach, a regular departure point north of Obock, clothes, flip-flops and shoes litter the sand.

Youssouf Moussa Mohamed, head of IOM's Obock office, pointed to two mass graves on the beach and said there were others nearby.

"More than 200 bodies are buried around here," he said.

These days, they have permission to use the cemetery at Obock. Dozens more unmarked graves bear witness to the horrors of the route.

Some 98 percent of the migrants Youssouf encounters are Ethiopian. Coming from a landlocked country, most have never seen the sea before attempting the crossing.

Between June and August, temperatures climb to 45C, and violent sandstorms blind migrants, leaving them lost in the desert. Some take their own lives in despair.

"We recovered about 20 bodies a month during the last hot season," said Youssouf.

The Djibouti coastguard has increased patrols against smugglers, who are mostly Yemeni, and a dozen seized boats were parked outside.

But with 200 to 300 migrants arriving in Obock every day, the coastguard and IOM cannot cope.

"Each year is more deadly than the last," said Youssouf. "And we don't know how long it will continue."

- Abandoned on the way -

Genet Gebremeskel Gebremariam, 30, could not provide for her four children and mother with the $1 to $2 she earned daily as a farm labourer in Tigray.

She crossed the desert and cliffs on foot with dozens of others.

"No one picks up those who are tired or fall; they leave them behind. We were forced to march like soldiers while being beaten with sticks from behind. Many women grew weak from thirst and hunger and were left behind in the desert," said Genet.

It was too much for her and she decided to turn back.

"Whether it's day labour or domestic work, my former life is better than this suffering," she said.

Others are too desperate to give up.

Muiaz Abaroge, 19, from western Ethiopia, still hoped to reach Saudi Arabia.

"It's frightening, but I have no other choice," he told AFP on the road to Obock.

"I know many people have perished, but I must get through this hardship."

👹 የሞትና የባርነት ሥርዓት የተገለጠበት ዘመን!

እናስታውሰውና፤ ተስፋፊው፣ አረመኔውና ዘር አጥፊው የጋላ-ኦሮሞ እስላማዊ አገዛዝ ሥልጣኑን ሙሉ በሙሉ መቆጣጠር ከጀመረበት ከ፳፻፲/2010 ዓ.ም ጀምሮ በደቡብ ክልል አዋሳኞች፣ በጌዲዮ ማህበረሰብ ላይ ያነጣጠሩ ግድያዎችን፣ መፈናቀሎችን እና የንብረት ውድመቶችን ሲፈጽም ቆይቷል፤ ዛሬ እስከ ትግራይ፣ አማራ፣ አፋር፣ ቤኒሻንጉልና ጋምቤላ እየፈጸመው እንዳለው የጋላ-ኦሮሞ የመስፋፋት ጂሃድ።

ታዲያ ይህ ባፋጣኝ መወገድ የሚገባው ስጋዊ የሞትና ባርነት ሥርዓት ከቀጥታ የጭፍጨፋ ዘመቻዎች በዘለቀ 'ተፈጥሯዊ' መሰል አደጋዎችን፣ ብከላዎችን፣ ረሃብንና በሽታዎችን የዘር ማጽጂያና መስፋፊያ መሣሪያ አድርጎ ቢጠቀም ምንም አያስገርምም። ተፈጥሮው ነውና! እነዚህ በአምስት መቶ ዓመት ታሪካቸው ተቆጥሮ የማያልቁ ብዙ አሰቃቂ ግፎችንና ጀነሳይዶችን የፈጸሙት አረመኔ ፍጥረታት ከኢትዮጵያ ምድር ባፋጣኝ መጠረግ አለባቸው!

Mudslides and floods caused by heavy rainfall are common in Ethiopia, especially during the rainy season.

In July 2024, a deadly mudslide caused by heavy rain claimed the lives of 229 people in southern Ethiopia.
