😳 Australia’s prime minister decided to attend a celebration of the end of Ramadan in a mosque in Sydney – but the result was nearly tragic.

Anthony Albanese ended up expelled by angry Muslims who called him a ‘genocide supporter’ and a ‘putrid dog’.

By now, we are used to the level of censorship down under, so it’s not surprising that videos on X can’t be embedded here, such as one showing him being offended by some of the Muslim faithful present, or another showing the security escorting him outside.

The Telegraph reported:

“The confrontation at Lakemba Mosque, in Sydney’s southwest, on Friday turned a religious celebration marking the end of Ramadan into a political revolt.”

Albanese attended the event alongside minister Tony Burke, and both sat in stony silence as the visit turned into chaos.

“Video footage shows a man yelling ‘genocide supporters’ directly at Mr. Albanese and Mr. Burke, while others shout: ‘Why is he in here? Get him out of here!’ Some of the other attendees, however, appeared welcoming to the political leaders.”

The angry crowd tried to get closer to the prime minister, as the mosque’s secretary, pleaded for calm.

“Security rushed Mr. Albanese into the mosque’s administrative offices. He was ushered out through a rear exit as his motorcade departed to cries of ‘shame on you’ and the slur ‘Alba-tizi’, a derogatory Arabic play on his surname referencing the buttocks.”

Two attacks by Muslim extremists have shocked a community in the Oromia region of Ethiopia at the end of February. Almost 30 believers have been killed. Please pray.

On 26 February, extremists stormed a market in the east Arsi Zone of the Oromia Region in Ethiopia, opening fire on citizens. Twenty Orthodox Christians were killed, as well as one Muslim guard, whilst some have disappeared – likely kidnapped.

Local sources report that a priest was amongst those killed when the attackers entered a church shouting religious chants before shooting at those inside. The attackers moved on to set fire to homes and crops, causing panic to spread and many residents to flee to nearby towns for refuge.

This was a historically peaceful area with a blend of Muslims and Orthodox Christians. But, two days later, on 28 February, more attackers struck the community once again, killing seven people inside a church.

Growing Tensions

According to locals, tensions have been increasing between different groups within the community. Members of the Orthodox Church say authorities are encouraging Muslim settlement and offering Muslim citizens government employment over Orthodox believers.

New Open Doors research indicates the targeted and organised nature of the attacks against Orthodox Christians. Fikiru Mehari*, east Africa expert on persecution, says, “These incidents frequently involve attacks on church members and the deliberate targeting of church leaders. With state protection minimal, these Orthodox communities become severely vulnerable.”

Jo Newhouse*, spokesperson for Open Doors work in sub-Saharan Africa says: “Not only are people displaced as a result of the attacks, but also likely severely traumatised. These Orthodox and Muslim communities have lived in relative peace alongside each other for years, and from our experience, these attacks can erode the social cohesion and peace that is necessary for communities to thrive.

“We urge the Ethiopian government on every level to do everything in its power to protect vulnerable communities in Oromia and ensure that those who are responsible are held accountable.”

Nigeria’s continued presence on the Countries of Particular Concern list is a good sign that religious liberty still motivates the American soul. Beyond this, Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) teamed up with Rep. Riley Moore (R-W.Va.) to introduce the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026 in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In response to this action, Religious Freedom International notes that Smith has chaired 13 hearings focused exclusively on Nigeria during the past 30 years. These positive endeavors confronting violations of religious freedom should be applauded.

Nevertheless, because evil never rests, leaders must continue exposing violations of religious liberty throughout the African continent. International Christian Concern (ICC) and other policy and advocacy groups consistently point out that “under-the-radar” countries must not be overlooked. Ethiopia, for instance, continues to disregard religious liberty — if not disregard, then at least demonstrate the lack of will to maintain it.

Like the best physicians with numerous patients, concerned leaders must allocate time and attention to addressing multiple needs simultaneously. Christians in Ethiopia need attention. The fact that Nigeria is in particularly bad shape does not excuse neglecting other places, such as Ethiopia.

In nearly every corner of Ethiopia, Christians suffer violence. The conflicts vary in their sources, but the outcome too often ends the same way: death or displacement. In the North, the Tigray War looms large, casting its long shadow of fear, death, and destruction. Far from calming such fears and shining light in such darkness, the Orthodox Church divided into separate factions.

In the South, several factors counteract attempts to live freely. The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), a militia group fighting for the ethnic Oromo people, incites some of the increasing violence. However, the group insists that the government provokes the violence, not the OLA. In addition, Wahhabi Islam planted itself in the Oromo region in the 1970’s, taking root among the Arsi Oromo people and others, creating violent clashes with Christians and with other Muslims along the way.

In the East, the largest Somali population in Ethiopia provides example after example of violence. Influenced by the same Wahhabi Islam as that taking root in Oromia, the eastern region of Ethiopia provides numerous examples of Christians being targeted for violence by family members and former friends if they leave Islam. The stories are sad, reflecting a macabre pattern of Muslims targeting Christian men with violence and threats so they will be afraid of losing jobs, thus suffering the shame of not providing for their families. Thankfully, many of these men remain faithful despite the cruel coercion at play.

Further west, a Catholic Mission compound was attacked and looted in December. ICC reported on this event. As the article highlights, this attack involved ethnic tribes in defiance of Ephesians 2:14, choosing ethnic loyalty over Christ, who breaks down earthly barriers and dividing walls. The priest who was interviewed grieved at the gruesome reality that some of the attackers were professing members of the church.

Beyond Christian persecution, Ethiopia continues to experience political unrest and ethnic violence.

Violence foreshadows further economic and political problems. For example, the ongoing violence against Christians has generated claims that the government is complicit, or at least incompetent. Whether this charge against the government is true remains to be seen, but the political and economic consequences will harm Ethiopia. In an opinion piece published by The Hill, Mesfin Tegenu explained, “For members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the implications extend beyond moral concern. Religious persecution is also a strategic warning sign. Where governments fail to protect faith communities, broader instability often follows — along with the erosion of the rule of law, the breakdown of social cohesion, and increased displacement.”

Christians must remain concerned about Nigeria while also demonstrating the capacity, like that of a great physician, to care for Ethiopia as well. Of particular concern for Christians should be the desire for unity among the various churches in the face of violence and suffering. In the spirit of John 17, Christians have both the opportunity and the obligation to be one under the risen Lord. Ethiopia has been a home to Christians for nearly the entire history of the church (Acts 8). Christians can further join legislators and leaders of goodwill fighting for religious liberty.

All Westerners ought to be concerned about Ethiopia. Reasons for concern include the global economy, international trade routes, counterterrorism cooperation, Red Sea security, and the fundamental right to religious freedom. But above all, the concern for Ethiopia is a human one. People of goodwill promote human life, health, and healing, not power, death, and coercion.

Afghanistan's Taliban Regime Announces New Criminal Code, Death for Preaching Non-Islamic Beliefs.

The Taliban has introduced a sweeping new criminal procedure code in Afghanistan that critics say formalities discrimination against non-Muslims, removes legal safeguards, and recognizes categories of “free” and “enslaved” people under the law.

Human rights group Rawadari has described the reforms as “deeply concerning.” The code reportedly recognises only Hanafi Sunni Muslims as legitimate, labels others heretics, and allows execution for those defending beliefs deemed contrary to Islam. It also introduces a strict class hierarchy, with punishments varying depending on social status.

Legal protections such as access to a defence lawyer and the right to remain silent have reportedly been removed. The code permits discretionary punishments, encourages individuals to punish “sinners,” and allows physical punishment of children within limits. Critics also warn that protections for women remain minimal, with limited penalties for domestic violence.

Richard Bennett, UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, has said the implications are “extremely concerning” and is reviewing the code from human rights and sharia perspectives.

In the 21st century, it still shocks many—particularly in the West—that certain Muslims insist on interpreting their sacred texts with absolute literalism, including the stark division of humanity into “free” and “slave.” For those well-versed in Islam’s core sources—the Quran and the prophetic traditions of Muhammad’s conduct—this distinction is neither obscure nor unexpected; it flows directly from the foundational texts themselves. On Jan. 4, Taliban’s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada signed and approved the “Criminal Procedure Code for Courts” (also known as “Principles of Criminal Procedures”), a framework designed to govern judicial proceedings in Afghanistan strictly according to Islamic Sharia. The code repeatedly employs the classical term ghulam (slave) and explicitly differentiates between “free” persons and “slaves” when assigning discretionary punishments for offenses.

This approach is not an innovation. It revives and codifies longstanding patterns from classical Islamic jurisprudence and historical Muslim societies, including those in Afghanistan.

The ghulam tradition historically included various forms of servitude and bondage. A particularly grim example is bacha bazi (“boy play”), the custom of powerful men keeping adolescent boys as entertainers, domestic servants, and subjects of sexual exploitation. Though formally prohibited since the 1990s, the practice endures. The U.S. State Department’s 2025 Trafficking in Persons Report documents its continuation, noting that boys—often from impoverished, orphaned, or desperate families—are trafficked and commodified for sexual slavery, with credible reports implicating even some high-ranking Taliban-affiliated figures.

Far from a mere cultural holdover, the Taliban’s code mirrors what many Muslims regard as the authentic, unaltered teachings of Islam’s sacred sources. Muhammad owned slaves, bought and sold them, and exchanged them. Reliable hadith traditions describe a black slave attending him at his room, another named Anjasha accompanying him on journeys. We are told Muhammad purchased a strong slave by trading two black slaves, and his daughter Fatima recounted that Muhammad received several slave girls. These accounts establish male and female slaves as an accepted reality within Muhammad’s own household and Muslim community. This establishes and legitimizes current trends among the Taliban and its ilk.

Worse, the Quran further envisions the Muslim paradise as including “eternally youthful servants” (ghulams), beautiful male youths likened to “scattered pearls,” who remain forever young and circulate among the blessed men of paradise, serving them with drinks and pleasures. These beings, specially and specifically created by Allah, embody one of the eternal rewards promised to the faithful men.

Seen in this light, the Taliban’s legislation is not a deviation but an accurate application of Islam’s texts as they stand. In our modern world, where equality, human rights, and the rejection of discrimination based on race, ethnicity, or social status are widely embraced, those who demand literal adherence to these “sacred” sources effectively seek to transplant the social norms of 7th-century Arabia into the present day.

In striking contrast, the teachings of Jesus Christ call His followers to a radically different path. Christ commands us to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:31), to treat others as we wish to be treated (Matthew 7:12), and to recognize the equal dignity of every human being made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27; Galatians 3:28). These principles compel believers to honor every individual, to reject hierarchies of domination, and to work actively for the freedom and flourishing of all.

While slavery was a universal institution across ancient civilizations—including pagan Rome, classical Greece, pre-Islamic Arabia, and many Muslim societies—it was the Christian World, shaped by biblical convictions and the application of the gospel’s ethic, that first abolished the slave trade, outlawed chattel slavery within its borders, and then led global efforts to eradicate it elsewhere. The abolitionist movement drew its moral fire from Scripture, with figures such as William Wilberforce and others arguing that no human being could rightfully be held as property when Christ had declared all to be precious in God’s sight.

The Taliban’s new code serves as a sobering illustration: when the Satanic Islamic law is implemented without restraint, it delivers precisely the structures and practices endorsed in its original sources.

An Afghan knifeman has attacked multiple people at a Jehovah’s Witness stand in a German train station.

The 35-year-old attacker was then overpowered by heroic civilians at Würzburg Central Station who rushed to the victims’ aid.

Police are treating it as an attempted homicide and have arrested a suspect in connection with the attack who is now in custody.

Bavarian Police reports say the suspect was in the entrance hall of the Würzburg Central Station at around 7.50am. Würzburg is located in central Germany, east of Frankfurt in the Bavaria region.

He approached the Jehovah’s Witness stand and then stabbed at a 68-year-old man and physically attacked a 55-year-old and a 51-year-old, police said….

Three of those attacked by the suspect sustained minor injuries, police confirmed. They did not suffer any cuts or stab wounds and are currently receiving medical attention by emergency services….

They are also investigating the man’s ‘exclamations’ and ‘gestures’ he made during the attack….

Local police service Polizei Unterfranken reported that, following the arrest, ‘there is currently no danger to the public.’…

Shocking videos document the incident at the Kaufland supermarket in Altenburg-Nord ( Thuringia ). Shortly after 6 p.m., an Afghan man dressed entirely in black entered the supermarket on Kauerndorfer Allee. In the produce section, he began his rampage, calmly grabbing heavy crates of vegetables from the table with both hands and tipping them to the floor.

This soldier of Allah needs less than fifteen minutes to turn a supermarket into a scene of devastation. He floods the floor by knocking over pallets of sparkling wine bottles. He empties entire aisles and hurls jars of preserves onto the tiles.

Only when two brave customers intervene does the rampage end.

Three saleswomen notice the troublemaker and tell him to stop immediately. The store is packed. One employee tries to de-escalate the situation in a calm voice. She asks: "Why are you doing that? Please stop. Please stay calm."

Staff wait in vain for security.

Unfortunately, the appeal has no effect. Another saleswoman shouts in frustration, "We're calling the police!" The supermarket vandal pauses briefly, says in a low voice, "Yes, call the police," and continues his rampage. More and more customers notice the Afghan Muslim; some preemptively move out of his way, others pull out their phones and film his food attack. Fortunately, the vandal doesn't directly attack any customers, and no one is injured.

A trail of destruction ran through the supermarket on Thursday evening. Police estimate the damage at around 5,000 euros.

Cucumber brine, sparkling wine, and hazelnut spread are mixed together on the tiles. "Where's the security?" you can hear employees shout. The bitter truth: there are no security guards on site.

Finally appeared two customers in work clothes, who are out shopping. They stopped the troublemaker and handed him over to the police. Together they approached the troublemaker, surrounded him, and gently guided him towards the exit, where the police arrive shortly afterwards.

Police Commissioner Selina Rolle confirmed to BILD: “The perpetrator was a 27-year-old Afghan man who threw boxes of goods from the shelves onto the floor. The Afghan man was in a state of mental distress – he was taken to a hospital for treatment.” She estimates the resulting property damage at a “mid-four-figure sum.”

The shelves are fully stocked again, but some damage is still visible. Even on Saturday, many shelves still contained shards of glass from the rampage.

😇 ዛሬ አቡነ አረጋዊ ናቸው፤ በደብረ ዳሞ ገዳም የክርስቶስ ተቃዋሚ ባቢሎን የተባበሩት አረብ ኤሚራቶችን ከእነ ድሮናቸው ጋብዘው ካህናቱን፣ መነኮሳቱን እና ምዕመናኑን እንደ አሳማ የጨፈጨፏቸውን አረመኔ የዋቄዮ-አላህ-ሉሲፈር ባሪያዎች ጂሃዳውያን ሁሉ ከእግዚአብሔር እና ቅዱሳኑ ጋር ሆነን እስከ መጨረሻው እንፋለማቸዋለን! እንበቀላቸዋለን!

ከአምስት ዓመታት በፊት ፥ ሰኞ፣ ጥር ፫/3 ፣ ፳፻፲፫/2013 ዓ.ም በሉሲፈራውያኑ ኤዶማውያን ሮማውያን እና በእስማኤላውያኑ አረቦች፣ ቱርኮች እና ኢራናውያን የሚደገፉት የፋሺስቱ ጋላ-ኦሮሞ እና የኤርትራ አገዛዞች ሃይሎች ከኦርቶዶክስ ቤተክርስቲያን እጅግ ጥንታዊ ከሆኑት (፮/6 ኛው ክፍለዘመን) አንዱ የሆነውን የአባታችን አቡነ አረጋዊን ደብረ ዳሞ ገዳምን በከፍተኛ የጦር መሳሪያዎች ድብደባ ማድረጋቸው የሚታወቅ ነው። በደርዘን የሚቆጠሩ ምዕመናን በዋናነት ደግሞ መነኮሳት የጥቃቱ ሰለባ መሆናቸውን እናስታውሳለን።

ያው አምስት ዓመት ሆነው፤ “ኢትዮጵያውያን እና ኦርቶዶክስ ክርስቲያኖች ነን” የሚሉት ወገኖች ግን ለመጸጸት እና ንሰሃ ለመግባት ሲሉ እስካዛሬዋ ዕለት ድረስ ስለዚህ አሳዛኝ ክስተት ከመናገር፣ ተጭፍጭፈው ሰማዕትነትን የተቀበሉትን አባቶች እና አገልጋዮች ከማስታወስ ተቆጥበዋል። ከጳጳሱ እስከ መምህሩ ሁሉም ዝም ጭጭ ብለዋል። እንዲያም በትግራይ የተፈጸመውን ጀነሳይድ ለመንጠቅ፣ ለማስረሳት ብሎም ፍትሕና ተጠያቂነት እንዳይኖር፤ “የአማራ ጀነሳይድ”፣ “የፋኖ ግስጋሴ”፣ “የደብረ ብርሃን ረሃብ”፣ “አርበኛ ቅብርጥሴ” ወዘተ የሚሉ አሰልቺ ድራማዎችን ከፋሺስቱ ጋላ-ኦሮሞ አገዛዝ ጋር ተናብበው በመሥራት ላይ ናቸው። በእነዚህ ከሃዲዎች ዘንድ ጸጸት እና ንሰሐ በፍጹም የማይታሰብ ነው። ሌላው ቢቀር እንኳን፤ “የትግራይ ተፈናቃዮች ወደ ከተሞቻቸውና መንደሮቻቸው ይመለሱ!” የሚል አማራ ወይም ጋላ-ኦሮሞ አለን? በጭራሽ የለም! በአክሱማዊቷ ኢትዮጵያ ክርስቲያን ወገናችን ላይ ባላቸው የቅናት መንፈስ፣ ምቀኝነት እና ጥላቻ ምክኒያት የኤሚራቶች፣ የሱዳን እና ሶማሊያ ሙስሊሞች መጥተው ቢሰፍሩባቸው ይመርጣሉ። እስኪ ተመልከት!!!

እንግዲህ ማን ንጹሕ ኢትዮጵያዊ እና ተዋሕዶ ክርስቲያን፣ ማን የኢትዮጵያ እና የተዋሕዶ ክርስትና ጠላት መሆኑን ጊዜው በግልጽ እየጠቆመን ነው!

ከትናንትና ወዲያ የዓለም ጤና ድርጅት ዋና ሥራ አስኪያጅ ዶ/ር ቴድሮስ አድሃኖም ስለ ብሪታኒያው የሜዲያ ስብዕና ስለ 'ፒርስ ሞርጋን' ጤንነት (ወድቆ ትንሽ ስለቆሰለ) ተጨንቀው በኤክስ የአይዞህ መልዕክት ሲያስተላልፉ ሳይ፣ በመገረም፤ “እኚህ ከትግራይ የወጡ ግለሰብ በእነዚህ ቀናት ስለ አክሱም ጽዮን፣ ማኅበረ ዴጎ፣ ደብረ ዳሞ ወዘተ አሰቃቂ ጭፍጨፋዎች፣ በመጠላይ ካምፖስ በረሃብ ስለሚያልቁት ወገኖቻችን አንዲትም ቃል አለመተንፈሳቸው ምን ያህል እራሳቸውንና ሕዝባችንን ቢጠሉ ነው? ሕንዶቹም ሆኑ አረቦቹ በዓለም አቀፍ ተቋማቱ፣ በተመድ ወዘተ ከፍተኛ ሥልጣን ሲያገኙ በቅድሚያ የሚሠሩት ለራሳቸው ወገን ነው... ” የሚለው ሃሳብ ውስጥ ነበር በንዴት የገባሁት። እስኪ ሕወሓት የተባለውን ከሃዲ ፓርቲያቸውን እንመልከት፤ እድሜ ልኩን ለትግራይ ሕዝብ ሳይሆን በታሪክም ሆነ ዛሬም ለሚያሳድደው፣ ለሚበድለው፣ ለሚጨፈጭፈው፣ ለሚያስረበው እና ለሚደፈረው እርኩስ መንፈሳዊ ጠላቱ ለጋላ-ኦሮሞ ነው በይበልጥ የሠራውና የጠቀመው።

ደብረ ዳሞ አቡነ አረጋዊ የተሰወሩበትና ቅዱሱ አባታችን አቡነ ተክለ ሃይማኖት ተክልዬ ከ፲፪/12 ዓመታት የቆዩበት ታሪካዊ ገዳም ነው። ዛሬ አስደበደባችሁት!

👉 የሚከተለው ከአምስት ዓመታት በፊት የቀረበ ጽሑፍ ነው፦

“ግራኝ ዐቢይ ከሜንጫ ወደ ሚሳኤል ተሸጋገረ | ሰሜን ኢትዮጵያን ለመደብደብ ተዋጊ አውሮፕላኖችን ሊሸምት ነው"

ርኩሱ ግራኝ ዐቢይ አህመድ ድኻውን ህዝባችንን ማስራብ፣ ማፈናቀል፣ ማቃጠልና ማረድ አልበቃውም። ይህ ሰይጣን በዓለም ታይቶ የማይታወቅ በጣም እርኩስ የሆነ ፋሺስታዊ ምኞትና ዕቅድ እንዳለው ሆኖ ነው የሚሰማኝ። በኢትዮጵያና ተዋሕዶ ላይ ያለው ጥላቻ በጣም ከፍተኛ ነው፤ ይህ ስሜቱ ከዚህ በፊት ያልተሠራ ታሪክ ለመስራት ከፍተኛ ጉጉት እንዲኖረው ይገፋፈዋል። እኔ በእርሱ ቦታ ብሆን የሚሰማኝ፤ “ሌላ ማንም ኃያል ጠላት ያቃተውን እኔ አደርገዋለሁ፤ ከሁሉ እበልጣለሁ! ይህች አጋጣሚ አትገኝም፣ ታሪክ ከእኔ ጋር ናት፣ ጀብደኛ አቋም መያዝ አለብኝ” ብሎ እንደሚያስብ ነው።

ህወሃቶች ከአጠራቀሙት አሮጌ የጦር መሳሪያ ጋር በትግራይ ተኝተዋል። ሳይተኩሱ እንደሸሹ ሳይተኩሱ ይሞታሉ። በሚቀጥሉት ዓመታት ጦርነት ቢቀሰቀስ እንኳን በቂ ጥይትና መለዋወጫ የማያገኙበት በርና መስኮት ሁሉ ዝግ ስለሆነ መሳሪያ ሁሉ ዝጎ ይወድቃል። በዙሪያቸው ሁሉም አዋሻኝ ድንበር ዝግ ስለሆነም አዳዲስ መሳሪያዎችን ለማግኘት አይችሉም። ገንዘቡስ ከየት ይገኛል? በሌላ በኩል ግን ያው እየቀለቡ ያሳደጉት አዞ፡ ዐቢይ አህመድ ለሕዳሴው ግድብ መዋል ከሚገባውና ከድኻው አፍ ተነጥቆ በተገኘው፤ እንዲሁም አረብ ሞግዚቶቹ ባጎረሱት ገንዘብ ዘመናዊ የጦር መሣሪዎችን ከግብረ-ሰዶማዊው ፍቅረኛው ማክሮን ለመግዛት በመዘጋጀት ላይ ነው። ምክኒያት ፈጥሮና ተዋጊ አውሮፕላን አብራሪዎችን ከግብጽ በማስመጣት ሰሜን ኢትዮጵያውያንን በአየር ለመጨፍጨፍ እየተዘጋጀ ነው፤ አዎ! እየመጣላችሁ ነው። የኖቤል ሽልማቱ የጭፍጨፋ ዋስትናው ነው!

ጂቡቲን የሰረቀችን አልበቃትም፡ ዛሬ ደግሞ ፈረንሳይ የሰሜኑን ሕዝበ ለማስጨፍጨፍ ተዋጊ አውሮፕላኖችንና ሚሳየሎችን ታቀብላለች። የራሱን ሃገር ታሪካዊ ካቴድራል ለማቃጠል የደፈረው የፈረንሳይ ፕሬዚደንት ማክሮን ያለምኪኒያት ወደ ላሊበላ አልተጓዘም።

ሆኖም ዕቅዳቸው ሁሉ ይከሽፋል፤ ዐቢይ፣ ለማ፣ ጃዋር፣ ሽመልስ,ታከለ፣ ማክሮን እና መሀመድ ሁሉም በኤርታ አሌ እሳተ ገሞራ ይቀቀላሉ።

🔥 Genocide Alert: Attacks on Ethiopia's oldest Churches and Monastries.

There are new reports that the joint Eritrean & Ethiopian fascists forces are bombarding Debre Damo, one of THE OLDEST MONASTRIES of the Orthodox Church (6th century), with heavy artilleries. Dozens of civilian casualties, mainly monks, also reported

Ethiopia’s most famous monastery has been bombed and looted of its ancient treasures according to reports emerging from the north of the country where fighting has left tens of thousands of people at risk of starvation.

Aid organisations warned they are “preparing for the worst” after four months of conflict between state forces and regional fighters in Tigray that has killed thousands amid reports of multiple massacres. Authorities in the capital have confirmed the rapes of scores of women and girls.

International experts have also raised the alarm over reports of “cultural cleansing” in the heritage-rich region with thefts and destruction of centuries-old artefacts at historically significant sites. In one recent alleged incident, troops from neighbouring Eritrea, which is backing government forces, ransacked manuscripts from the remains of the remote sixth-century Debre Damo monastery after clambering 80ft up a cliff to reach it.

Debre Damo is one of Ethiopia's most important monasteries and can only be accessed through a steep cliff with a rope.

Other buildings on the flat-topped mountain that were also “completely destroyed” included the monks’ ancient dwellings and the earliest existing church in Ethiopia that is still in its original style, according to the Europe External Programme with Africa.

Attacks have also been reported in recent months at the Church of St Mary of Zion, which many Ethiopian Christians believe houses the Ark of the Covenant.

Specialists have warned that Tigray’s stolen gems could be spirited out of the country and sold to collectors. Video taken by Belgian journalists reporting on the conflict apparently showed an Eritrean tank loaded with plunder.

Alessandro Bausi, an expert in Ethiopic texts and manuscripts at Hamburg University, said he had heard from multiple sources that key sites were being targeted and “irreplaceable” artefacts destroyed or pillaged.

Mary’s Meals, a Scottish-based charity working in Tigray, said that millions of people were at imminent risk of starvation and lacked access to proper sanitation or medical care.

It said: “The region’s capital, Mekelle, is being overwhelmed by displaced and traumatised people arriving every day. Many are unaccompanied children who have lost their parents.”
