But achieving her biggest goals — like Medicare for All — would take years to implement, she acknowledged Tuesday in an interview with Ryan Warner, senior host of Colorado Matters.
Warner: Some prominent members of the Jewish community and even people you campaigned alongside like Senator Julie Gonzales are concerned about your candidacy.
Most recently, the refusal to call the Boulder firebombing antisemitic. The self-described liberal Rabbi Rachel Kobrin wrote as much in The Denver Post: "I have repeatedly found myself wondering whether Kiros understands the fear she creates in Jews like me.” Did you read that piece?
Kiros: I did.
Warner: What'd you make of it?ስ
Kiros: Well, first I was grateful to the rabbi for writing it and for sharing her concerns. I think we are embarking on a new kind of frontier on this conversation about what our relationship is going to look like to Israel, or with Israel, rather, and what kind of expectations we have of our allies. Specifically to speak to the Boulder firebombing attack, I wish I could have conveyed in that moment better the horror and tragedy of what had happened and specifically the impact it had on the Jewish community. Being able to speak to that in a meaningful way is really important.
Warner: What was left unsaid?
Kiros: Yeah. I think what's important for folks to hear is that at the end of the day, this was an attack, a horrific attack on a group of Jewish people that were peacefully protesting, an attack that is putting Jewish people in greater danger, and I think whether or not this was motivated by antisemitism or anti-Zionism, it was equally horrific and tragic and dangerous to the Jewish community and leads to more attacks against the Jewish community and rising levels of hate. And my commitment has always been to combating any kind of hate, whether it's hate for an ethnicity, a religion, a political ideology and…
Warner: With a vague sense there that you speak from some experience as the recipient of some of that.
Kiros: Yeah, you know I immigrated from the northern region of Ethiopia (Tigray) where a genocide has taken place, where conflict is even now potentially erupting again, where anywhere from 600,000 to 1 million people might've been killed. We still don't know the number.
And witnessing the attacks that I received as a Tigrayan Ethiopian here in the states, I think it's really important to understand whether or not violence is being motivated by hatred for an ethnicity or a religious group or hatred for a political ideology, neither of which is justified by any means.
But I think in order for us to understand how to dismantle that kind of hate, we have to understand where it's coming from. And to understand violence in that way I think is our responsibility as people who are in positions where they have a responsibility to combat that kind of hate and combat that kind of violence.
