A Dublin-trained bishop in Ethiopia has told the Irish News how civil war has put his country through “hell on earth.”

Bishop Tesfasellassie Medhin, of the Ethiopian Catholic Eparchy of Adigrat in Ethiopia, studied with the Jesuits in Dublin during the 1980s and returned to Ireland for a visit this year.

At his office in Adigrat Catholic Church, located in the vast mountain range in the northern Tigray region of Ethiopia, pictures on the wall show him shaking hands with three Popes - Benedict, Francis and Leo.

Happily namechecking Irish placenames from Maynooth to Randalstown and Kircubbin, he speaks fondly of the longstanding bond between his country and Ireland, including decades of support from NGOs like Trócaire.

With Tigray devastated by the civil war between 2020-22, Bishop Medhin speaks with a quiet anger at the harm the conflict is still causing.

“The Tigray population have been through hell on earth,” he said.

“If people can name it, it’s a genocide at best…in a country where over a million lives are lost and a horrific number of gender violence and mutilated young people, people destroyed as families, infrastructure, economic resources.”

He describes one personal experience where Eritrean soldiers came to forcibly remove him from the church and how his priests tried to surround him in protection.

The Tigray War saw the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in conflict with the Ethiopian Federal Government and Eritrean forces, which he describes as like a siege from all sides.

“Absolute closure, (it) was like ‘is this really a human experience?’”

He shares a painting from a young church member, depicting a priest standing between civilians and soldiers while jets drop bombs overhead.

“You see all kinds of things used on people, by land and by air. The church has to be in the middle of all this,” he said.

“We suffered, we couldn’t realise our plans. But still, by the grace of God and where it was possible by our partner’s support and solidarity, that we could be between the killers and the population.

“To try to calm and stop further blood flow…so this image shows the double role of the church in such crisis.”

He also calls it “unacceptable” that half of the children in Tigray have not been able to return to school.

“There’s still 1.3 million children not back to school yet, including our own Catholic schools,” he said.

“Over five years, this is an unacceptable crime about God given rights of people to education.”

Asking why the world stays quiet in the face of such injustice and violence, he adds: “It can only stop if there are pressures on policy makers. In the Catholic church we want to stand for justice.

“A wounded society cannot get healing unless there’s a recognition of what has happened.

“If that’s blocked, people can only carry their pain…we are trembling to live like this.”

ባለፉት ስድስት ወራት ከነብዩ ኤልያስ፣ ነብዩ ሔኖክ፣ ከፓትርያርክ አባታችን ቅዱስ ሔኖክ፣ ከቅዱስ ራጉኤልና ቅዱስ ጴጥሮስ ጋር በተያያዘ ተዓምር ልላቸው የምችላቸውን አስገራሚ ክስተቶች እየታዘብኩ ነው። በዚህች ምድራችን ላይ ብቻ ሳይሆን በተለይ ፀሐይ ላይ የሆነ ዓለምን ሊለውጥ የሚችል ክስተት በእነዚህ ቀናት እየታዘብን ነው። ከእነ ነብያቱ ሔኖክ እና ኤልያስ መምጣት ጋር የሚገናኝ ክስተት ይሆን? የሆነ ትልቅ ነገር ይሰማኛል!

በመጽሐፍ ቅዱስ ውስጥ ካሉት ቅዱሳን ነብያት ዝናም በማቆም ብቸኛው ነብይ ቅዱስ ኤልያስ በዘመነ ነገሥታት ከነበሩ ነቢያት አንዱ ነው፤ አባቱ ኢያሴንዩ እናቱ ደግሞ ቶና ይባላሉ፤ አባትና እናቱ በምግባር አሳደጉት፤ ከዚያም ወደ ገዳም ሄደ በጾምና በጾሎት በብሕትውና (በገዳም) ኖረ፤ እርሱ በነበረበት ዘመን ንጉሥ አክአብና ሚስቱ ኤልዛቤል የተባሉ ነበሩ፤ እነዚህ ሰዎች እግዚአብሔርን የማያምኑ በጣዖት የሚያመልኩ ነበሩ፤ ድሮ በኢሎፍላውያን እጅ የነበሩት ጣዖታት (ዳጐንና ቤል) በዚያ ዘመን ወደ እስራኤል ገብተው ነበር። ነብዩ ኤልያስ ግን በዚህ ክፉ ትውልድ መካከል ሆኖም ሥርዓተ ኦሪትን የሚያውቅና እግዚአብሔርን የሚያመልክ ሰው ነበር። በዚያ ወራትም እግዚአብሔር ለነብይነት ጠራው። እርሱም “እሺ” ብሎ ታዝዞ የእግዚአብሔርን የጸጋ ጥሪ ተቀበለ። ነብዩ ኤልያስ ብዙ ጊዜ ለጉዳይ ካልሆነ ከሰው ጋር መዋል ማደርን አይወድምና መኖሪያውን በተራሮችና በዱር አደረገ፤ በተለይ ደብረ ቀርሜሎስ ለእርሱ ቤቱ ነበር። (ድርሳን ነብዩ ኤልያስ የታኅሣሥ ወር)

ውድ እግዚአብሔር ልጆች! ሕዝቡን እግዚአብሔር ከክፉ ነገር እየጠበቀ፣ የእርሱን ስጦታ እየተመገበ ይኖር ነበር፤ እነርሱ ግን ለቤል (ለበዓል) ለተባለ ጣዖት የሚሰግዱ ነበሩ። ይህን ጊዜ ግን ነብዩ ኤልያስ ወደ አክአብ ዘንድ ሄዶ ጣዖት ማምለክ እንደ ሌለበት ሳይፈራ ገሠጸው፤ (ተቆጣው) ጣዖት የሚያመልክ ከሆነ የሚመጣውን መከራ እንዲህ በማለት ነገረው፦ ‹‹በፊቱ የቆምኩት እስራኤል አምላክ ሕያው እግዚአብሔርን ከአፌ ቃል በቀር በእነዚህ ዓመታት ጠልና ዝናም አይሆንም፤ (፩ኛመጽሐፈ ነገሥት ፲፯፥፩) ለሦስት ዓመት ከስድስት ወር ዝናም ከሰማይ እንዳይወርድ ተከለከለ። ሕዝቡ በኃጢአቱና ጣዖት በማምለኩ ምክንያት ዝናም ስላልዘነበ እህል በማጣት ተጐዳ። ነብዩ ኤልያስን ግን አምላካችን በዋሻ ተቀምጦ ቁራ የሚበላውን እያመጣለት ይመግበው፣ ምንጭ ፈልቆለት ይጠጣ ነበር።

ከዚያም እግዚአብሔር ሕዝቡ በረኀብ እንደተጎዳ ይመለከት ዘንድ ለነብዩ ኤልያስ ምግብ ይወስድለት የነበረውን ቁራ አስቀረበት፤ ነብዩ ኤልያስም ምግብ ፍለጋ ሰራፕታ ወደ ተባለ ሥፍራ ሄደ፤ በዚያም ነብዩ ባሏ የሞተባትና ዮናስ የተባለ ልጅ የነበራትን ሴት አገኘ፤ እርሷም እንጐቻ ጋግራ ብታበላው ቤቷን በበረከት ሞላው። ታዲያ አንድ ቀን ልጇ ታሞ ሞተባት፤ ነብዩ ኤልያስም በጸሎቱ የሞተውን ልጇን (ሕፃኑ ዮናስን) ከሞትም በጸሎቱ አስነሳላት። (፩ኛነገሥት ፲፯፥፲፯)

ውድ የእግዚአብሔር ልጆች! ነብዩ ኤልያስ “ለምን ጣዖት ታመልካላችሁ” በማለት ዝናም እንዳይዘንብ ቢያደርግም እግዚአብሔር ለሕዝቡ አዘነ፤ ነብዩ ኤልያስም ወደ እግዚአብሔር ጸልዮ ለሦስት ዓመት ከስድስት ወር የዘጋውን ሰማይ ከፍቶት ዝናም እንዲዘንብ አደረገ፤ ሕዝቡንም ሰብስቦ ጣዖት የሚያመልኩም መጥተው መሥዋዕት እንዲሠው አስደረገ፤ ነገር ግን ያመልኩ የነበረው ራሳቸው ሰዎች የሠሩትን ጣዖት ነውና ጣዖቱ ጸሎታቸውን አልሰማቸውም፤ ነብዩ ኤልያስ ግን ገና የእግዚአብሔርን ስም ሲጠራ መሥዋዕቱን ተቀበለለት፤ በዚህም ለሕዝቡ የጣዖታትን ከንቱነት እንዲሁም የእግዚአብሔርን አምላክነት ተረድተው አመኑ፤ ንግሥት ኤልዛቤልም ይህንን ስትሰማ እያልን ልትገድለው ባለች ጊዜ ከፊቷ ፈቀቅ አለ፡፡ (ወደ ሌላ ቦታ ሄደ)

ውድ የእግዚአብሔር ልጆች! ነብዩ ኤልያስ በዘመኑ ብዙ ድንቅ ነገርን አድርጓል፤ ስለ እውነት ይመሰክር ነበር፤ ለተበደሉ ይከራከር ነበር፤ ለምሳሌ አንድ ጊዜ ኤልዛቤል የተባለችው ንግሥት ናቡቴ የተባለን ሰው አስገድላ መሬቱን ነጠቀችው፤ ነብዩ ኤልያስም ሳይፈራ ወደ ንጉሡ እና ሚስቱ በመሄድ ናቡቴን ገድለው መሬቱን መንጠቅ እንደሌለባቸው በማስገንዘብ ተናገራቸው፤ በዚህም ሊገድሉት አሳደዱት፤ እርሱ ግን እግዚአብሔር ከእርሱ ጋር ነበርና ሊገድሉት አልቻሉም፤ ነብዩ ኤልያስ ብዙ ድንቅ ተአምራትን እያደረገ፣ ስለ እግዚአብሔር እያስተማረ፣ ሰዎች ከጣዖት አምልኮ እንዲወጡ እየመከረ ከኖረ በኋላ ከዚህ ምድር የሚለይበት ጊዜ ደረሰ፤ የእርሱ ደቀ መዝሙር ለነበረው ነብዩ ኤልሳዕ መጎናጸፊያውን ሰጠው፤ እግዚአብሔርም በእሳት ሠረገላ ጭኖ ወደ ብሔረ ሕያዋን (የቅዱሳን ሰዎች መኖሪያ) ወሰደው፡፡

ውድ የእግዚአብሔር ልጆች! ነብዩ ኤልያስ ታሪኩ ብዙ ነው፤ በተለይ በመጽሐፍ ቅዱስ በመጽሐፈ ነገሥት ተመዝግቦ ይገኛል፤ እኛ ግን ለግንዛቤ እንዲሆናችሁ ጥቂቱን ታሪክ ነገርናችሁ፤ ብዙ ቁም ነገር እንደምትቀስሙ ተስፋ እናደርጋለን፤ ከነብዩ ኤልያስ ታሪክ የዓለማት ፈጣሪ እግዚአብሔር እንደሆነ፣ ጣዖት ማምለክ እንደማይገባ፣ እንደ ኤልዛቤል በሰዎች ላይ ክፋት ማድረግ እንደማያስፈልግ፣ እንደ ነብዩ ኤልያስ ስለ እውነት መመስከር እንደሚገባ፣ በእግዚአብሔር መታመን፣ ጾመኛ፣ ጸሎተኛ፣ ለተበደሉና ለተቸገሩ መርዳት እንዳለብን እንማራለን፡፡

ነብዩን ኤልያስን ንጉሥ አክአብና ኤልዛቤል ሊገድሉት ሲሉ እግዚአብሔር ከእነርሱ ከልሎ በዋሻ ውስጥ አስቀምጦ አሞራ ምግቡን እንዲያመጣለት እንዳደረገ ሁሉ እግዚአብሔር ለሚታመኑት፣ ከልብ ለሚከተሉት፣ እውነትን ለሚናገሩና ለሰው ለሚያዝኑ እርሱም እንደሚረዳቸውም ተመልክተናል፤ ስለዚህም በሃይማኖታችን የጸናንና በምግባር የጎለበትን እንሁን! ሥነ ምግባር ያለው፣ ለወላጆች ታዛዥ፣ በሁሉ ነገር ጎበዝና፣ ንቁ ልጆች ልንሆን ያስፈልጋል!

የነብዩ ኤልያስ ዓመታዊ ክብረ በዓል ታኅሣሥ አንድ ቀን እና ጥር ስድስት ቀን ይከበራል፡።

In the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) calendar, the Prophet Elijah (Kidus Elias) is honored, with his birth commemorated on the 1st day of the month of Tahisas (December 10th), a significant feast alongside the birth of the Virgin Mary (Lideta Mariam) and the Archangel Raguel. The EOTC celebrates his miraculous birth, where angels were seen around him, and his life as a great prophet who brought Israel back to God, eventually being taken to heaven in a fiery chariot.

According to Ethiopian Orthodox calendar The prophet Elijah was born on December 10 [Tahisas 1], in the province of Gilead, to his righteous parents, his father, Joshua, and his mother, Tonya, who had lived in the house of Levi. On the eighth day, when they had performed circumcision, they named him Elijah.

When the prophet Elijah grew up learning the Law, he left his mother, his father, his relatives, and all his money and lived in the wilderness. St. Paul in the Hebrews' message, "They went about in sackcloth, on carpets, and in goatskins; they were distressed, afflicted, afflicted, hungry, thirsty. These are the things that the world does not deserve: the forest goes for the mountain and the mountain, the cave for the caves and the crumbs for fear. " Hebrews 11:37

"Elijah" also means a lamp to the house of God, that olive oil might shine upon all that are in darkness. When the Israelites were in darkness when they broke into the law of God, worshiping idols, the prophet Elijah arrived and brought them back to God with a bright heart.

One of the great miracles the prophet had done with the power of God was to make rain and to revive again [1 Kings 17: 2]. The sacrifice of the Lord in the presence of the priest, and the disgrace of the priests [2 Kings 18: 38].

One day, as the prophet Elijah was praying, the Angel, the Holy Raguel was revealed and told him, "Rejoice, for the time has come for you to ascend to heaven. You will live in a land of complete happiness. A place where no sickness, death, sorrow, but full of blessing. There is one like you, Enoch, who writes the commandment of the Most High God.

"When the time came for God to bring Elijah to heaven, the prophet went from Gilgal to Jericho, and his disciple Elisha said, "By your living soul, I will not leave you." When they arrived in Jericho, there came small prophets from Jericho. Elijah's ascension was revealed to them by the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, and they said to Elisha, "Do you know that today the Lord will take away your Lord from you?" He said, "I know, keep quiet." Then Elijah went with Elisha, when he said, "Sit down here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan . I will not leave you."

Fifty men from the company of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing the place where Elijah and Elisha had stopped at the Jordan. 8 Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it. The water divided to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?” “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.

10 “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.”

11 As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. 12 Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two. 13 Elisha then picked up Elijah’s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the water with it. “Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over. [2 Kings 6-14]

As Elijah crossed the Jordan River into the living nations, the believers born of the water and the Holy Spirit will inherit the kingdom of God. Our Lord said in the Gospel of John that "a person who is not born again cannot see the kingdom of God."

The prophet Elijah was one of the fifteen prophets (Moses, Joshua, Samuel, Jonathan, Gad, David, Solomon, Elisha, Ezra, Isaiah, Daniel, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and John the Baptist). This is a prophet who spoke physically with our Lord on the Mount of Tabor, a priest who broke down the sacrifice of idols, a traditional priest who initiated the ordinance;

Our Lord, our Savior, Eyesus Kirstos, has called John "Elijah" when he witnessed the greatness of the Holy Spirit of baptism. Our Lord calls John “Elijah” because it implies that he is teaching ahead of the Second Coming of Eyesus Kirstos,

James 5:17: "Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months."

In the first of a series of special reports, the Irish News travelled with Trócaire to the Tigray region of Ethiopia which has been devastated by two years of genocidal war.

IN the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, two years of genocidal+- war is estimated to have cost a million people their lives.

Three years after the fighting stopped, another million in Tigray are still too scared or unable to return home, and are living in camps for displaced people.

Conditions are extreme, with women and children especially vulnerable to gender-based violence, a lack of food and medicines, as well as overcrowding.

This is just part of the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by the Tigray War from 2020 to 2022, with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in conflict with the Ethiopian Federal Government and Eritrean forces.

She told the Irish News how the war forced her to leave her home in 2020 with her young family just days after giving birth.

Having delivered by caesarean section, she said the long journey to the IDP (internally displaced people) camp was extremely painful, as well as leaving her under a constant fear of attack.

At one camp at a former airport in the city of Adigrat, single mother Letberhan (39) is one of around 3,000 people living there

Now living there for five years, she shares a tiny tent with six children using a mattress on the floor and benches made from mud.

“We are in a dire situation. I hope all the time, after these five years, I imagine that one day will be a bright day and that our problem will be solved.

“At this time I cannot return back home because I feel insecure. The area is occupied (by militias) so I know what they are doing before.

“They rape women and also they kill any person from Tigray, so having such conditions I don’t want to go there without any guarantee. I prefer to die here.”

With the majority of people in the camp suffering trauma from the war, Letberhan said there is a fear of attack from those suffering from psychological problems.

Needing firewood in order to cook her food rations, she said children going to fetch it can often face attack, especially adolescent girls.

“Even here in the IDP I don’t feel safe, because as a single mum there are men around here.

“I’m afraid that I have to be a victim of this gender-based violence. After five years I am eagerly waiting the one day that I can get back home so that I can feel safe.”

In Tigray’s capital city, Mekele, a destroyed school being used as a camp is supporting nearly 14,000 displaced people, either living on site or in the surrounding area.

Of these, less than 1,000 are eligible for cash assistance, and there is a lack of medical supplies for diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Visiting the camp, the Irish News was shown one classroom now housing around 100 people – with areas of just a couple of metres divided up for individual families.

Mather (35) has five children, with her last being born in the camp.

Her main wish is to return to her home in western Tigray with her children, but the continuing danger and financial collapse in the region makes this impossible for now.

The desperation has also pushed many young people into the hands of human traffickers.

Yirgalem, a protection adviser with Trócaire, explained that smugglers will typically cover their expenses until they reach Libya before ruthlessly extorting their families.

“The smugglers are requesting that families send around one million birr (10,000 dollars) to send their children to Europe and the Middle East,” she said.

“Currently a lot of families are in a crisis situation because their children are on the verge of death.

“They are asking for huge money and the families are unable to afford it. The families are desperately seeking for a solution.”

እስኪ ስንቶቹ ናቸው ሁሉም ነገር ተሟልተሏቸው የሞቀ ቤት ውስጥ በሰላም እየኖሩ፤ “የአክሱም ጽዮን ጭፍጨፋ ፭ኛ ዓመት መታሰቢያ፣ ከክርስቲያን ወገናችን ጎን ነን!” ብለው የማሕበረሰባዊ ሜዲያ ፕሮፋይላቸውን እንኳን ለጥቂት ቀናት በመለወጥ በጣም ቀላል የሆነውን አንዱን ክርስቲያናዊ ግዴታቸውን እንኳን መወጣት አልቻሉም። ለመሆኑ ይህን የማያደርጉበት ምክኒያት ምን እንደሆነ፣ ለምን እንዳልቻሉ ያውቁታልን?

ለብዙ ሺህ ዓመታት እጅግ በጣም ብዙ ዋጋና ከፍተኛ መስዋዕት እየከፈለ ተዘርዝሮ የማያልቅ ውለታ ለዋለላቸው ለአክሱማዊቷ ኢትዮጵያ ክርስቲያን ሕዝባችን ድምጽ ለመሆን ብሎም እራስን አሳልፎ ለመስጠት የከበዳቸው እና ያልፈለጉትበት ምክኒያት ምን መሆኑን ያስቡበታልን? ዝምታቸው ብዙ ዋጋ እንደሚያስከፍላቸውስ እንዴት መገንዘብ ተሳናቸው? ለመሆኑ ለመታረምና ንሰሐ ለመግባትስ ትንሽ ሙከራ እንኳን ያደርጋሉን? ይህ እኮ በጣም ቀላሉ ሥራ ነው! ታዲያ ለምኑ ነው እየኖሩ ያሉት? ለሆዳቸው፣ ለስጋቸው፣ ሱፍና ከረባት አጥልቆ ለመታየት? ቤትና መኪና ገዝተው ለመኖር ብቻ? ለባርነትና ሞት?

እንግዲህ ለወገንህ፣ ለሃገርህ እና ለእግዚአብሔር አምላክህ ብለህ እራስህን አሳልፈህ የማትሰጥ ከሆነ፣ ወንድማችን ዲያቆን ቢንያም ፍሬው በትክክል እንደሚነግረን ፤ የኢትዮጵያን ትንሣኤ በዚህ ዓለም በዚያኛውም ዓለም ሳታይ በእሳት ተጠርገው ከሚወገዱት መቶ/100 ሚሊየን የኢትዮጵያ ማህፀን ካልወለደቻቸው ስጋውያን መካከል ነህ ማለት ነውና፤ ወዮልህ! ወዮልህ! ወዮልህ!

🚨 International Christian Concern has issued a stark warning: while global attention shifts elsewhere, Tigrayan Christians continue to bleed.

Even as the U.S. designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern, Christian communities in Ethiopia remain trapped in a crisis that did not end with the November 2022 peace agreement — it only went quiet.

Reports now confirm what many feared:

The genocide never stopped. It simply went dark.

A United Nations investigation (2023) documented crimes against humanity long after the Tigray War was declared over. In 2024, the New Lines Institute released a 120-page report concluding that attacks against the Tigrayan people meet the legal definition of genocide — naming military and regional forces involved.

According to the report, Tigrayan Christians have endured:

• Mass killing

• Intentional starvation and destruction of communities

• Systematic bodily and psychological harm

• Measures aimed at preventing births and erasing an entire people

These acts violate the Genocide Convention of 1949 — signed by Ethiopia itself. The world once swore Never Again. Yet here we are.

And the suffering is not only human — it is spiritual.

Tigray is home to 1,500 years of Christian history — ancient monasteries, rock-hewn churches, relics, Scripture, and sacred heritage.

• ❖ Churches and Monasteries burned.
• ❖ Artifacts looted — some already turning up for sale online.

A Christian civilization — one of the oldest on Earth — stands on the brink of erasure while the nations are silent.

This is not only war. It is the attempted destruction of a people and their Christian faith.
