The driver who ploughed into
pedestrians and cyclists on the French holiday island of Oléron said
he was obeying the orders of Allah but is not considered to be a
jihadist, the local public prosecutor has said.
Five people were injured, two
critically, when the driver hit pedestrians and cyclists on Wednesday
in a rampage lasting 35 minutes. A suspect, named as Jean G, was
subsequently tasered and arrested. He shouted “Allahu akbar” as
he was being detained.
The rampage is being treated as
a criminal rather than a terrorist attack, Arnaud Laraize, the local
public prosecutor, said on Thursday. “He was under the influence of
cannabis … He is not considered to be a jihadist and has no link
with terrorist groups,” Laraize said.
“He said he was obeying the
orders of Allah who asked him to make sacrifices. He said he had
first turned to Catholicism but had recently converted to Islam on
his own, and with the help of social media. He said he had wanted to
die by setting himself on fire but had not succeeded in causing his
vehicle to explode. He said he had been hearing voices in his head
for some time.”
Earlier on Thursday, Laurent
Nuñez, the interior minister, told France-Info radio that the
suspect had spoken of “self-radicalisation”.
He added: “Based on a number
of factors that exist with this individual, and the fact that he
actually shouted ‘Allahu akbar’, there are religious references
in his case that are quite clear and quite explicit.
French media reported on
Thursday that two of the five people injured have left hospital. Two
others were still said to be in a critical condition: a 22-year-old
woman hit by the car while out for a morning jog and a 69-year-old
man who was cycling.

35-year-old man allegedly drove his car into pedestrians and cyclists
along the route between Dolus-d’Oléron and Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron.
Prosecutor Arnaud Laraize said the suspect “deliberately”
targeted victims, injuring at least nine
people—four seriously—before being arrested. Witnesses described
chaos as the vehicle sped through several kilometers, stopping only
when the driver abandoned and tried to ignite it. Police used a stun
gun to subdue him and found gas canisters inside the car. The man
reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the assault, though no
formal terror link has been confirmed. Interior Minister Laurent
Nuñez visited the scene as investigators weigh whether the rampage
stemmed from extremism, mental illness, or personal motives. Known
previously to police, the suspect now faces attempted murder charges.
The island, once a haven for holidaymakers, is reeling from the shock
of violence invading its peaceful streets.

Muslims
have been given a carpet for praying at the Vatican Apostolic
Library, its vice prefect said Wednesday.
“Of
course, some Muslim scholars have asked us for a room with a carpet
for praying and we have given it to them,” Giacomo Cardinali, vice
prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library, told La Repubblica.
“Incredibly

Tunisian Muslim was
shot and killed by police in Marseille on Tuesday after allegedly
stabbing multiple people while reciting verses from the Qur’an.
At
least four people were injured during a stabbing spree in the coastal
French city of Marseille. According to Le Figaro, the incident
occurred following an argument between the migrant knifeman and a
downtown hotel owner over the lack of payment for a room.
Police
initially attempted to subdue the Tunisian national with a taser;
however, they were ultimately forced to shoot him down after he
failed to comply.
Le
Figaro reported that during the altercation with police, the migrant
was quoting verses from the Islamic holy book of the Qur’an.
The
paper went on to report that the suspected attacker had previously
been placed under judicial control, barring him from carrying
weapons.
According
to Le Parisien, the Tunisian man had previously come under the
scrutiny of local intelligence services for having made anti-semitic
remarks.
All
four victims of the stabbing spree have reportedly been hospitalised,
with three being considered in a state of “absolute emergency”
and the other being classified as being in “relative emergency”.
