Airlines around the world cancelled and delayed flights heading into
the weekend after Airbus announced on Friday that it had ordered
immediate repairs to 6,000 of its A320 family of jets in a recall
affecting more than half of the global fleet.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which is the main
certifying authority for A320 aircraft, issued the instruction on
Friday night as a precautionary action, saying that “safety is
paramount”.
The US Federal Aviation Administration also issued an emergency
airworthiness directive for certain Airbus planes, requiring the
aircraft to replace or modify specific software.
The fix mainly involves reverting to earlier software and is
relatively simple, but must be carried out before the planes can fly
again, according to the bulletin to airlines seen by Reuters.
Of the 6,000 jets affected, a sub-set will need a time-consuming
hardware change rather than a quick software fix, though the number
that require more extensive fixes was smaller than the initial
estimates of 1,000, Airbus said.
The setback appears to be among the largest Airbus recalls in its
55-year history and comes weeks after the A320 overtook the Boeing
737 as the most-delivered model. At the time Airbus issued its
bulletin to the plane’s more than 350 operators, about 3,000
A320-family jets were in the air.
The recall came over the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, but Delta
said it expected the issue to affect fewer than 50 of its A321neo
aircraft. United said six planes in its fleet were affected and it
expected minor disruptions to a few flights. Hawaiian Airlines said
it was unaffected.
The world’s largest A320 operator, American Airlines, said 209 of
its 480 A320 aircraft would need the fix. It said it mostly expected
these to be completed by Saturday, with about two hours required for
each plane.

according to NASA.
Earth-orbiting satellites detected an X1.9 class solar flare at 02:49
UTC on Dec. 1, 2025. It came in the wake of a couple of weaker
M-class solar flares.
Massive Sunspot
The massive sunspot,
dubbed AR 4294-96, is one of the biggest seen in a decade and
expected to be the source of solar flares over the next few weeks,
but Dec. 1's solar flare actually came from a smaller one called AR
4295, according to SpaceWeather.com.
Solar flares alone
do not cause displays of aurora at Earth. Large solar X-ray flares
can change Earth’s ionosphere, causing radio blackouts on the
day-side of the Earth, according to NOAA.
This one saw a blackout in Australia.
The electromagnetic
radiation from a solar flare travels at the speed of light, taking
just eight minutes to reach Earth. It’s what can follow in the
aftermath of a big solar flare — a coronal mass ejection — that
can lead to geomagnetic storms. That’s when an aurora can develop.

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory between Monday and Thursday, the
hole spans an astonishing 186,000 miles—enough space to line up
over 23 Earths side by side. Known as a coronal hole, this dark
region on the sun’s surface forms when magnetic fields open up,
allowing charged particles to escape as high-speed solar wind.
Coronal holes
are like gateways where the sun’s magnetic field stretches and lets
wind rush out into space. The solar wind emerging from this
particular butterfly-shaped hole is racing toward our planet and is
expected to make landfall by Sunday.
This solar wind
carries with it charged particles that can interact with Earth’s
magnetic field. When this happens, we may experience geomagnetic
storms—disturbances that can trigger both technological glitches
and spectacular natural shows like the northern and southern lights.
What does
this mean for Earth
According to
Spaceweather.com, the solar wind from this vast coronal hole could
bring geomagnetic storms classed between G1 and G2. This scale runs
from G1 (weak) to G5 (extremely strong). Although these storms are
relatively mild to moderate, they can still shake up satellites,
disrupt communication networks, and even cause brief blackouts.
For anyone
relying on GPS or airline communications, disruptions may become
noticeable during such events. On the other hand, people living
closer to the poles could witness stunning auroras—colorful waves
of light caused when solar particles collide with molecules in
Earth’s atmosphere.
Why equinoxes
tend to increase geomagnetic storms

why these storms often peak near equinoxes, the times in March and
September when day and night are almost equal. During these periods,
