Two
attacks by Muslim extremists have shocked a
community in the Oromia region of Ethiopia at the end of February.
Almost 30 believers have been killed. Please pray.
On
26 February, extremists stormed a market in the east Arsi Zone of the
Oromia Region in Ethiopia, opening fire on citizens. Twenty Orthodox
Christians were killed, as well as one Muslim guard, whilst some have
disappeared – likely kidnapped.
Local
sources report that a priest was amongst those killed when the
attackers entered a church shouting religious chants before shooting
at those inside. The attackers moved on to set fire to homes and
crops, causing panic to spread and many residents to flee to nearby
towns for refuge.
This
was a historically peaceful area with a blend of Muslims and Orthodox
Christians. But, two days later, on 28 February, more attackers
struck the community once again, killing seven people inside a
church.
Growing Tensions
According
to locals, tensions have been increasing between different groups
within the community. Members of the Orthodox Church say authorities
are encouraging Muslim settlement and offering Muslim citizens
government employment over Orthodox believers.
New
Open Doors research indicates the targeted and organised nature of
the attacks against Orthodox Christians. Fikiru Mehari*, east Africa
expert on persecution, says, “These incidents frequently involve
attacks on church members and the deliberate targeting of church
leaders. With state protection minimal, these Orthodox communities
become severely vulnerable.”
Jo
Newhouse*, spokesperson for Open Doors work in sub-Saharan Africa
says: “Not only are people displaced as a result of the attacks,
but also likely severely traumatised. These Orthodox and Muslim
communities have lived in relative peace alongside each other for
years, and from our experience, these attacks can erode the social
cohesion and peace that is necessary for communities to thrive.
“We
urge the Ethiopian government on every level to do everything in its
power to protect vulnerable communities in Oromia and ensure that
those who are responsible are held accountable.”

Nigeria’s
continued presence on the Countries of Particular Concern list is a
good sign that religious liberty still motivates the American soul.
Beyond this, Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) teamed up with Rep. Riley
Moore (R-W.Va.) to
introduce the Nigeria Religious Freedom
and Accountability Act of 2026 in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In response to this
action, Religious Freedom International notes that Smith has chaired
13 hearings focused exclusively on Nigeria during the past 30 years.
These positive endeavors confronting violations of religious freedom
should be applauded.
Nevertheless,
because evil never rests, leaders must continue exposing violations
of religious liberty throughout the African continent. International
Christian Concern (ICC) and other policy and advocacy groups
consistently point
out that “under-the-radar”
countries must not be overlooked. Ethiopia, for instance, continues
to disregard religious liberty — if not disregard, then at least
demonstrate the lack of will to maintain it.
Like the best physicians
with numerous patients, concerned leaders must allocate time and
attention to addressing multiple needs simultaneously. Christians in
Ethiopia need attention. The fact that Nigeria is in particularly bad
shape does not excuse neglecting other places, such as Ethiopia.
In nearly every
corner of Ethiopia, Christians suffer violence. The conflicts vary in
their sources, but the outcome too often ends the same way: death or
displacement. In the North, the Tigray War looms large, casting its
long shadow of fear, death, and destruction. Far from calming such
fears and shining light in such darkness, the Orthodox Church divided
into separate factions.
In the South,
several factors counteract
attempts to live freely. The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), a militia
group fighting for the ethnic Oromo people, incites some of the
increasing violence. However, the group insists that the government
provokes the violence, not the OLA. In addition, Wahhabi Islam
planted itself in the Oromo region in the 1970’s, taking root among
the Arsi Oromo people and others, creating violent clashes
with Christians and with other Muslims along the way.
In the East, the
largest Somali population in Ethiopia provides example after example
of violence. Influenced by the same Wahhabi Islam as that taking root
in Oromia, the eastern region of Ethiopia provides numerous examples
of Christians being targeted for violence by family members and
former friends if they leave Islam. The stories are sad, reflecting a
macabre pattern of Muslims targeting Christian men with violence and
threats so they will be afraid of losing jobs, thus suffering the
shame of not providing for their families. Thankfully, many of these
men remain
faithful despite the cruel coercion at
play.
Further west, a
Catholic Mission compound was attacked and looted in December. ICC
reported
on this event. As the article highlights, this attack involved ethnic
tribes in defiance of Ephesians 2:14, choosing ethnic loyalty over
Christ, who breaks down earthly barriers and dividing walls. The
priest who was interviewed grieved at the gruesome reality that some
of the attackers were professing members of the church.
Beyond Christian
persecution, Ethiopia continues to experience political unrest and
ethnic violence.
Violence foreshadows
further economic and political problems. For example, the ongoing
violence against Christians has generated claims that the government
is complicit, or at least incompetent. Whether this charge against
the government is true remains to be seen, but the political and
economic consequences will harm Ethiopia. In an opinion piece
published
by The Hill, Mesfin Tegenu explained,
“For members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the
implications extend beyond moral concern. Religious persecution is
also a strategic warning sign. Where governments fail to protect
faith communities, broader instability often follows — along with
the erosion of the rule of law, the breakdown of social cohesion, and
increased displacement.”
Christians must remain
concerned about Nigeria while also demonstrating the capacity, like
that of a great physician, to care for Ethiopia as well. Of
particular concern for Christians should be the desire for unity
among the various churches in the face of violence and suffering. In
the spirit of John 17, Christians have both the opportunity and the
obligation to be one under the risen Lord. Ethiopia has been a home
to Christians for nearly the entire history of the church (Acts 8).
Christians can further join legislators and leaders of goodwill
fighting for religious liberty.
All Westerners ought to be
concerned about Ethiopia. Reasons for concern include the global
economy, international trade routes, counterterrorism cooperation,
Red Sea security, and the fundamental right to religious freedom. But
above all, the concern for Ethiopia is a human one. People of
goodwill promote human life, health, and healing, not power, death,
and coercion.

Nigeria, Congo and Ethiopia
Pegged as Most Deadly Countries For Christians in a New Report
There are several crisis
spots that have the potential of being overlooked since the
initiation of kinetic action in Iran.
For several weeks now
there have been rising concerns in the Horn of Africa regarding
whether war will indeed break out. That question should be framed to
ask not if war will break out. The question should be when and where
hostilities will resume.
It was just a week ago
that AEI had an excellent event with various data points showing some
of the fault lines in the region and how Saudi Arabia, the Emirates,
Turkey and Israel are supporting various actors in several conflicts
in the Red Sea basin. This area has become a vital part of the global
economy since hostilities began in Iran at the end of February.
One of the countries that
currently is a source of angst in the region was the subject of a
Congressional briefing on March 2nd. The timing of this briefing was
on point as well. The hearing was regarding the situation in
Ethiopia.
Two events marked the
importance of this briefing. On February 27th reports emerged that 21
members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church including a Priest were
killed in the Sherka district of Arsi in Oromia region. Jihadist
Jawar Mohammad's Arsi district is the epitome of Orthodox Chsristian
massacre in Ethiopia which has been going on for over 7 years.
In
the past, many of our Orthodox people have lost their lives in
various districts of the Arsi Diocese, and
those who survived have been displaced from their homes and
properties and have fled to neighboring cities, where they are living
in danger of hunger and disease.
Events in this part of
Ethiopia rarely create the news coverage like what was witnessed
during the Tigray war however the situation is just as volatile. What
is a challenge is that in its 2025 annual report documenting events
that took place the previous year, The United States Commission on
International Religious Freedom made no recommendations regarding
Ethiopia to be designated as a Country of Particular concern nor be
placed on the Special Watch List.
Also, on March 2nd we saw
a story that may have provided confirmation that the fascist Oromo
Islamic regime of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed not only is now involved
in a regional conflict but also trying to bury its role from prying
eyes. On that date the Sudanese Military Council the de facto regime
in charge warned the fascist Oromo Islamic regime
against “Hostile Behavior” for allowing its territory to be used
by the Rapid Support Forces to launch attacks into Sudan. It further
stated that Khartoum reserved the right to respond to these
violations.
This action highlights two
problems for genocidal Abiy Ahmed. First
off, this statement will be seen by some as confirmation of some
media reports from the last couple of weeks that the RSF has set up a
base in Ethiopia. A statement from the Sudanese Foreign Ministry
claimed that “the government monitored the entry of drones from
Ethiopian territory throughout February and early March targeting
sites in Sudan.”
The fascist Oromo Islamic
regime of Ethiopia expelled three journalists from Reuters after
reporting the existence of the facility. The current regime has a
hostile policy regarding Freedom of the Press, so sadly this is not
much of a surprise. It also highlights the love that the current
regime has for UAVs. They were used successfully in the Tigray
conflict that ended in 2022 and are currently being used in Amhara
currently without the international scrutiny that was seen in Tigray.
There is a chance to hold
the fascist Oromo Islamic regime of Ethiopia Government accountable
for its actions. Last September Congressman
Buddy Carter (R-GA 1) introduced H Res 937 which condemns the
current leadership in Addis for its actions that threaten regional
stability, violate fundamental human rights and undermine the
strategic interests of the United States in the Horn of Africa.
Passing this Resolution
will be a great start to holding the fascist Oromo Islamic regime of
genocidal Ahmed Accountable and it needs to happen as quickly as
possible.

At Least 14 Ethiopian Christians Killed by
Oromo Muslims | በኦሮሞ
ሲዖል ክርስቲያኖች እያለቁ ነው
👉 Courtesy: The
Washington Post, by Robert Wilkie -
Monday, November 10, 2025
The Honorable Robert Wilkie
served as the 10th secretary of veterans affairs and undersecretary
of defense for personnel and readiness in the first Trump
administration.
The world said “Never again”
after Rwanda, yet we’re watching in silence as ancient Christianity
is erased in Ethiopia. America risks its soul and security by doing
nothing.
In northern Ethiopia’s Tigray
region, more than 1 million people have been slaughtered since 2020.
Women and children are starved to death. Entire villages have been
erased. Soldiers have told rape victims, “A Tigray womb should
never give birth.” That statement alone should remove any doubt
about what this is. It is not a civil conflict. It is genocide: a
state-sponsored attempt to destroy a Christian people and their
culture.
Tigray is not a footnote in
history. It is the cradle of African Christianity, the land of the
Queen of Sheba, the Kingdom of Axum and the Ark of the Covenant. Its
rock-hewn churches, older than many European cathedrals, are among
the holiest sites in the world. Today, those sanctuaries lie in
ruins, deliberately shelled by Ethiopian and Eritrean forces. Priests
and worshippers have been executed, and ancient manuscripts and
crosses, stolen from monasteries, have been surfacing on online
marketplaces.
If we lose Ethiopia, we lose one
of Christianity’s oldest strongholds and a vital partner for the
West in a region already teetering between tyranny and terrorism.
This is not just a moral
catastrophe; it is a strategic one as well. Ethiopia is situated on
the Horn of Africa, a region that borders the Red Sea and the Bab
al-Mandab Strait, through which 12% of global trade passes. Whoever
controls this corridor controls the arteries of global commerce and
energy. Today, that control is slipping off to a dangerous coalition
of adversaries.
China, Iran, Russia and other
countries have armed and financed Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s
regime, using drones and munitions to carry out the campaign against
Tigray. Iran, through a formal defense pact signed earlier this year,
now has an operational foothold in the Horn of Africa, within
striking distance of global shipping lanes and Israel’s southern
flank. China, meanwhile, continues its Belt and Road Initiative
encirclement of East Africa, Koering ports and mineral routes
critical to its military and economic dominance.
His alignment of autocratic
powers represents a new “Islamo-Marxist axis” that threatens
regional stability and the broader interests of the United States and
its allies. By refusing to acknowledge the true nature of the Tigray
crisis, we embolden those who perceive Western hesitation as a sign
of weakness.
The Tigrayan people are no
strangers to the fight for freedom. They led the effort to overthrow
Ethiopia’s Marxist Derg dictatorship three decades ago and outlawed
communism in its aftermath. They share with Americans a belief in
faith, self-determination and resistance to tyranny. They are natural
allies, abandoned in their hour of greatest need.
William Wilberforce, the man who
ended the British slave trade, once said, “You may choose to look
away, but you can never again say that you did not know.” We now
know. The question is: What will we do?
The United States should act
immediately and decisively. First, it must formally recognize the
genocide in Tigray. Language matters; to call this a “civil war”
is to excuse barbarism. Second, the Trump-Vance administration should
impose targeted sanctions on Ethiopian, Eritrean and foreign
officials responsible for the atrocities and on those supplying the
weapons. Third, we must establish secure humanitarian corridors that
deliver aid to the starving. Finally, the U.S. should lead a
coalition of democratic nations to protect Ethiopia’s remaining
Christian heritage and stabilize the Horn of Africa.
America does not need to send
troops, but it must send a message: Faith, freedom and human dignity
are nonnegotiable both at home and abroad. Silence in the face of
genocide is not neutrality; it is complicity.
The moral case for action is
clear. So is the strategic one. Allowing this genocide to continue
will deepen regional instability, fuel another refugee crisis and
hand China and Iran permanent leverage over one of the world’s most
vital trade routes.
The people of Tigray are not
asking for American soldiers. They are asking for America’s voice.
We should raise it now before one of the oldest Christian
civilizations on earth vanishes, and with it a cornerstone of faith
and freedom.

In October alone, the region saw
more than 25 Orthodox Christians killed in its East Arsi Zone. One
attack in Honqolo Wabe (Siltana) Woreda left five people dead,
reportedly from the same family. Another saw the historic hilltop
Asebot Monastery attacked, leaving one Orthodox Christian killed and
his son seriously injured.
A similar rise in persecution
has also affected the Catholic community, prompting the Catholic
Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia to issue a statement condemning the
violence and calling on the government to take urgent measures to
protect citizens. The bishops noted that “Catholics have died and
property has been burnt” in an attack near St Mary’s Catholic
Church in West Hararghe. They added: “Our Church strongly condemns
this kind of inhuman act. Therefore, our Church calls upon the
government to do the necessary law enforcement work to ensure the
peace and security of citizens.”
The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA),
an armed insurgent group seeking to advance self-determination and
rights for the Oromo people, Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group, has
been blamed for some of the violence. However, its former political
wing has cited the government as being responsible for “numerous
atrocities against civilians” in recent weeks. It is also believed
that ethno-religious extremists may be behind the surge in attacks.
Ethiopia has a history of
religious violence, with the United Nations High Commissioner for
Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, intervening after 30 people were
killed in deadly clashes between Muslims and Orthodox Christians in
2022.
The latest partisan violence
also recalls the 2015 murders of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians in
Libya. In two separate videos released by ISIS, masked militants
beheaded and shot Ethiopian Christians in orange jumpsuits. The
Ethiopian Orthodox Church has designated the men as martyrs and
passed a decision to commemorate them annually.
Ethiopia is home to one of the
world’s oldest Christian communities, with roots dating back to the
fourth century. Around 330 AD, King Ezana of Aksum, in what is now
modern-day Ethiopia, converted to Christianity, making it the state
religion. Today, Ethiopian Orthodoxy is practised by about 44 per
cent of the population, with Protestants making up a further 23 per
cent. Catholics account for less than 1 per cent of the East African
nation.
✞ The
Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) claimed that more than 25
civilians have been killed in East Arsi Zone, Oromia regional state
in October 2025 alone.
The majority of
the victims were christians apparently shot dead or fatally stabbed
by gunmen of the fascist Oromo Islamic regime, the church’s public
relations department disclosed on Wednesday.
The department
said it compiled the information through the church’s structure,
from the diocese level down to local congregations, and confirmed
that “in total, in October, more than 25 innocent people were
killed.
The statement
also quoted a report received by the church on October 28, suggesting
that “five people were killed in Honqolo Wabe (Siltana) district.”
Other reports
indicate they were members of the same family.
While the
department did not specify the identity of the perpetrators, it
stated that it will present detailed information received to the
relevant body.
According to
information reaching APA three civilians were killed and four others
abducted in what eyewitnesses described as a “religious-motivated
attack” carried out by “unidentified gunmen” around 10:00 p.m.
on Monday, 27 October 2025, in Hela Zibaba Kebele, Shirka Woreda,
East Arsi Zone of Oromia Regional State.
Eyewitnesses,
who requested anonymity over safety concerns, said the civilians were
killed in an “atrocious manner” by the gunmen.
According to
the religious father, the victims were “taken out of their homes
and shot,” adding that such attacks in the area began in 2021 and
have since escalated.
He further
indicated that approximately 190 people have been killed in similar
attacks in the area since 2021.
He said the
identity and motive of the perpetrators remain unknown but confirmed
that the victims were “followers of the Orthodox Tewahedo faith.”
