Monday, on the afternoon of May 11, 2026, The historic Asebot Holy Trinity and Abba Samuel Zedebere Wegege Monastery was attacked by Oromo Terrorists.
A priest serving at the monastery was killed in a shootout at 9:00 a.m.
The attack was carried out from the lower part of the monastery, according to information from the scene.
In a statement given to local media, the monks at the monastery said that their area is surrounded by gunmen – who are always sponsored by the fascist Oromo Islamic regime – and that they are having a hard time even retrieving the body of their brother.
"We are unarmed monks; no security forces have reached us yet. All concerned parties, please be our voice," they appealed.
It is worth noting that similar attacks have been carried out repeatedly on the Asebot Holy Trinity Monastery in recent times, and as a result, many monks and local believers are being persecuted and severely abused.

Establishment: Founded by the venerated Saint Abba Samuel, likely during the 14th century, it was later supported by Emperor Dawit II.
The monastery established by Ethiopian saint Father Samuel is located within western Hararghe Zone of the illegal Oromiya region. It rests on the Asebot mountain, overlooking the Afar depression in the northeast, offering high scenic beauty.The Asebot monastery has two churches: one in the middle of the mountain, named Debre Wegeg Aba Samuel, for nuns, and the other on top of the hill, Debre Wegeg Kidist Selassie, for monks. The monasteries are education centers for disciples, the monks and nuns also being dedicated workers involved in bee keeping, forest management and farming for their need.
Destruction and Restoration: The monastery was destroyed in the 16th century by Ottoman Turkish Jihadist, Ahmad b. Ibrahim al-Gazi, restored by Empress Zawditu in 1911, and later restored again by Emperor Haile Selassie.
