The sustained
threats to Armenian religious and
cultural heritage across Artsakh
(also known as Nagorno-Karabakh) have reached a new level following
reports that the Azerbaijani regime has razed another prominent
church in the region.
Satellite imagery
obtained by Caucasus
Heritage Watch (CHW) confirmed that the Holy
Mother of God Church, which stood in the former capital city of
Stepanakert, was demolished within the last eight weeks.
The Artsakh Tourism
and Cultural Development Agency shared the news of the church’s
destruction on social
media on Tuesday, April 21, only three days
before the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Though the
agency did not share photos of the demolition in its notice, CHW’s
researchers were able to pinpoint supporting photographic evidence
within a day by pulling images from the Sentinel-2 satellite from
March 3 and April 2.
“Higher resolution
imagery will provide a clearer picture in the coming weeks,” the
group of scholars said in a statement. “CHW will also continue
working with satellite image providers to try to provide greater
resolution on the timing of the destruction.”
Unlike the
centuries-old churches and burial grounds that have been damaged,
appropriated, or destroyed by the Azerbaijani regime since the forced
displacement of over 130,000 Armenians in
September 2023, the Holy Mother of God Church was consecrated
in 2019 after 12 years of construction. During
the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020, the church
served as a bomb shelter amid the Azerbaijani
bombardment of Stepanakert.
Scholars have warned
that Azerbaijan’s targeted destruction of these sites, having
accelerated since the swift and deadly 2023 takeover of the Artsakh
region, amounts to “cultural
genocide.”
News of the latest
demolition comes shortly after the resignation of the Armenian
Genocide Museum-Institute Director Edita Gzoyan at the request
of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
While accompanying United States Vice President JD Vance and his wife
for a visit to the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial complex in Yerevan last
February, Gzoyan reportedly presented Vance with a book about
Artsakh, which Pashinyan interpreted as a “security issue.”
“On my
instructions, yes, I asked her to write a resignation letter. I
considered it a provocative act, contrary to the foreign policy
pursued by the government,” Pashinyan reportedly said at a
briefing.
In his campaign for
reelection coming up on June 7, Pashinyan, who has long
been blamed for the dissolution of the
33-year-old autonomous state, has repeatedlyreiterated
that further dialogue surrounding Artsakh threatens the 2025 peace
agreement in which Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to recognize each
other’s (newly established) territorial integrity. On April 20,
Pashinyan most recently emphasized that the “Karabakh
topic,” as in the push for
negotiating the ethnic Armenian population’s right of return to the
region, has been closed for the sake of peacekeeping.

cleansing, forced displacement, large-scale massacres, and widespread
sexual violence.
The November 2022 truce never completely ended grave abuses in the
Tigray region: violations continued during the conflicts in Amhara
and parts of Oromia. EU member states made clear that complete
cessation of hostilities and accountability for past violations were
key conditions for the resumption of full economic support to
Ethiopia.
Now, rising tensions between Tigray’s main political party, the
Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), and the federal government
raise serious concerns of renewed atrocities.
In addition, the government has made no meaningful progress towards
accountability for conflict-related abuses. After the EU refrained
from renewing an international investigation into abuses in Ethiopia,
the government’s transitional justice process effectively stalled.
At the same time, the authorities have imposed heightened
restrictions on independent media, harassed and detained journalists,
threatened civil society groups, and severely curtailed peaceful
assembly and free speech. A number of youths were reportedly arrested
in the capital, Addis Ababa, in April simply for listening to a

the government. The government has offered no clarity on
investigations into the apparent abduction of the managing editor of
the Addis Standard, a leading independent media outlet. Just weeks
before the elections, these developments are especially troubling.
Ethiopia’s increasingly dire human rights context suggests that the
European Commission likely overlooked whether its own human rights
benchmarks were met before resuming direct budget support.
If
the Commission’s goal is to advance economic and social benefits
for Ethiopians, it should prioritize other recipients and other forms
of aid and at least reaffirm the EU’s commitment to accountability
and the protection of civilians. Absent such a message, Sikela’s
announcement seems to reward a repressive pre-electoral phase,
crushed civic space, and renewed risk of atrocities with fresh cash
and public praise, betraying the European bloc’s previous calls for
justice and respect for human rights.

In these days, senior officials are traveling from
the Middle East, Asia, Europe and North

testimonies provide critical insight into the nature and impact of
sexual violence committed against pregnant and lactating women during
the conflict in . The account below reflects the experiences of women
who endured severe violence while they were in vulnerable maternal
conditions. A 45-year-old survivor from the western zone recaptures
that she experienced gang rape in March 2021 by 7 EDF perpetrators
while she was 9 months pregnant. She experienced the gang rape in a
place named Adi-Tsetser while she was fleeing home to Shire. One of
the perpetrators, a female soldier, compressed her abdomen, causing
her lasting pain. As a result, the survivor gave birth to a stillborn
baby.
The experience
described above was not an isolated incident. Multiple survivors
reported similar acts of violence while pregnant or caring for
infants. On January 24, 2021, EDF soldiers gang-raped a 35-week
pregnant woman who was nearly expecting a child. However, the
perpetrators never satisfied with raping her for hours. One of the
soldiers then inserted his hand down into the womb of the woman and
cruelly pulled out the fetus.
The
consequences of these violations extend beyond the immediate
suffering of survivors. Sexual violence against pregnant and
