በቪየና ከበባ የኦቶማን ቱርኮች ሽንፈትን አስቡ። እ.አ.አ በእንቍጣጣሽ መስከረም ፩ (11) እና 12, 1683(የኢትዮጵያ አዲስ አመት ቀን) በፖላንድ ንጉስ ትእዛዝ ስር ያሉ የክርስቲያን ሰራዊት ቱርኮች ከተማዋን ለመያዝ ለሁለት ወራት ያደረጉትን ዘመቻ አቁመዋል። ሙስሊሞች ቢያንስ እስከ 21ኛው ክፍለ ዘመን ድረስ እስልምናን በአውሮፓ ላይ ለመጫን በድጋሚ አልተቃረቡም። ሂላይር ቤሎው የተባሉ ጸሐፊ በአንድ ወቅት እንደተናገሩት፣ “በታሪክ ውስጥ በጣም ዝነኛ ከሆኑት መካከል አንዱ ሊሆን የሚገባው ቀን - መስከረም 11, 1683” ነው።

ክርስትና እንደ መሀመድ እና አጥቂው ሊዋጋ ስለሚችል በአውሮፓ ውስጥ ደህንነት ነበረበት። እናም በመስከረም 11, 1683 በቪየና ጦርነት አሸንፈው ቱርኮች ሲሸሹ ድንኳኖቻቸውን በቦታቸው ጥለው ሄዱ። እና የጃን ሶቢስኪ ሰዎች ወደ ድንኳኑ ውስጥ ገብተው እነዚህን የባቄላ ከረጢቶች፣ የቡና ፍሬዎች አገኙ፣ እና ይህ አዲሱ የቱርክ ሙስሊም መጠጥ ቀንና ሌሊት እንዲዋጋ የፈቀደለት መሆኑን ተረዱ።

እና ኧረ ግን ሊጠጡት እንደሚችሉ እርግጠኛ አልነበሩም ምክንያቱም ኧረ በነገራችን ላይ የቡና ፍሬው የመጣው ከአፍሪካ አንደኛዋ አፍሪካዊት ሀገር ከሆነችው ክርስትያን የሆነችው ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ያሉ ክርስቲያኖች ነው። እናም ሙስሊሞች በኢትዮጵያ ያሉ ክርስቲያኖችን ካፊር/ኩፋር በማለት ይጠሩታል ትርጉሙም ካፊር ማለት ሲሆን ባቄላውም ከኢትዮጵያ የመጣ በመሆኑ የካፊር/የኩፋር ባቄላ ወይም የካፊር ባቄላ ብለው ጠሩት። ስለዚህ ዛሬ የካፊር ጽዋ ነበራችሁ። ግን መጠጣት እንዳለባቸው እርግጠኛ አልነበሩም። ስለዚህም ጽዋውን ለጳጳስ ቀሌምንጦስ ወሰዱት እርሱም ቀመሰው እና "ይህ ለሙስሊሞች መተው በጣም ጥሩ ነው, እናጠምቀው." ከዚያም ቡና በመላው አውሮፓ ተሰራጭቷል.

አሁን ቱርኮች ቪየና እየወረሩ ሲሄዱ ከግድግዳው በታች ዋሻ ውስጥ ገብተው ፈንጂ ያስቀምጣሉ እና ያፈነዱታል እና የግድግዳው ክፍል ይፈርሳል። ደህና፣ ዳቦ ጋጋሪው ገና በቪየና ነበር፣ እና ከመሬት በታች ያለውን ጩኸት ሰማ። እናም ወታደሮቹ የውሃ ጉድጓዶችን አወጡ ፣ እናም ሞገዶቹ የት እንዳሉ አዩ ፣ እናም ቆፍረው ዋሻውን ያዙ እና ቪየናን አዳኑ። ስለዚህ፣ ከዚያ በኋላ፣ ለዳቦ ጋጋሪው እሱን በማስጠንቀቅ ሊሸለሙት ነበር። "ሽልማት አያስፈልገኝም የሙስሊም ጨረቃ ቅርጽ ያለው ዳቦ እንዳዘጋጅ ብቸኛ ፍቃድ ስጠኝ" ይላል። እና ይህም የቁርስ ዳቦ 'ክሮሷ' (ክረሰንት/ሩብ ጨረቃ) ተብሎ ይጠራ ጀመር። ስለዚህ በሚቀጥለው ጊዜ ቡና ሲጠጡ እና ክሮሷ ሲበሉ የመስከረም 11፣ 1683 የቪየና ጦርነት ድልን ማክበር ይችላሉ።

Consider the defeat of the Ottoman Turks at the Siege of Vienna. On Sept. 11 and 12, 1683, (Ethiopian New Year's Day) Christian armies under the command of the King of Poland ended the Turks’ two-month campaign to take the city. Never again would Muslims come so close to imposing Islam on Europe, at least until the 21st century. As writer Hilaire Bellow once said, it is “a date that ought to be among the most famous in history — September 11, 1683.”

Christianity owed it safety in Europe to the fact it could fight as well as the Muhammad and aggressor. So when they won the battle of Vienna, September 11, 1683, and the Turks fled, they left their tents in place. and Jan Sobieski's men go into the tents and they find these bags of beans, coffee beans, and they realize this was the new Turkish Muslim drink that allowed him to fight day and night.

And um but they weren't sure if they should drink it because um by the way, the the coffee bean came from Ethiopia in Africa, which was the one African country to stay Christian, the Christians in Ethiopia. And so since the Muslims called the Christians in Ethiopia Kafir/Kuffar, which means infidel, and the bean came from Ethiopia, they called it the Kafir/Kuffar bean or the infidel bean. So have you had your cup of infidel today. But they weren't sure if they should drink it. So they took a cup of it to Pope Clement and he tasted it and said, "This is too good to leave for the the Muslims. Let's baptize it." And then coffee spread across Europe.

Now, as the Turks were invading Vienna, they would tunnel under the walls, lay explosives, and then blow it up, and the portion of the wall would crumble. Well, the baker was up early in Vienna, and he heard the noise under the ground. And so, the soldiers put out buckets of water, and they could see where the ripples were, and they they dug and they intercepted the tunnel and they saved Vienna. So, afterwards, they were going to reward the baker for warning him. He says, "I don't need a reward. Just give me the sole permission to cook a pastry in the shape of the Muslim crescent." and it was called a croissant. So the next time you have coffee and croissants, you can celebrate the victory of the battle of Vienna, September 11th, 1683.

'ኮፕቲክ ሶሊዳሪቲ/ኮፕታዊ አብሮነት' የተባለው ድርጅት እ.አ.አ በ2016 ለፊፋ እና ለዓለም አቀፉ ኦሊምፒክ ኮሚቴ መደበኛ ቅሬታዎችን ካቀረበበት ጊዜ አንስቶ ይህንን የግብፅ የምናባዊ ስፖርቶች አፓርታይድ ለማስቆም ሲፈልግ ቆይቷል።ድርጅቱ የዓለም የስፖርት አካላት የየራሳቸውን ፀረ መድልዎ መስፈርቶች እንዲያከብሩ ግፊት አድርጓል።

ሆኖም ለዓመታት መድልዎ ቢደረግም፣ ወጣት ኮፕቶች በችሎታ፣ በተግሣጽ፣ ወይም በብቃት ላይ የተመሠረቱ መሰናክሎች ያጋጥሟቸዋል፣ ነገር ግን በክርስትና እምነታቸው ብቻ መድልዎው ክፉኛ ቀጥሏል።

ግብፅ እግር ኳስ፣ የቅርጫት ኳስ፣ መረብ ኳስ፣ የእጅ ኳስ እና ሌሎች የኦሎምፒክ ስፖርት ፌዴሬሽኖችን ጨምሮ በርካታ ፕሮፌሽናል ብሄራዊ የስፖርት ሊጎች አሏት። ሆኖም የኮፕቲክ ክርስቲያኖች ከአስር እስከ አስራ አምስት በመቶ/10-15% የሚገመተው የግብፅ ህዝብ ቢሆኑም፣ ከሞላ ጎደል ከታላቅ ሙያዊ ስፖርቶች በስልት እንዲርቁ ተደርገዋል።

የ2018 የኮፕቲክ አንድነት ሪፖርት “በግብፅ ስፖርት ክለቦች ውስጥ በኮፕቶች ላይ የሚደረግ መድልዎ” የኮፕቲክ አትሌቶች በመደበኛነት ከሊቀ ልማት ፕሮግራሞች እና ሙያዊ እድሎች እንዴት እንደሚገለሉ ዘግቧል። አንዳንዶች ክርስቲያናዊ ማንነታቸውን እንዲደብቁ አልፎ ተርፎም በቀላሉ በሙያቸው ለመራመድ እድል ለማግኘት ሲሉ ስማቸውን እንዲቀይሩ ግፊት እንደተደረገባቸው ገልጿል።

ብዙውን ጊዜ አድልዎ የሚጀምረው በወጣትነት ደረጃ ሲሆን አሰልጣኞች እና የክለብ ኃላፊዎች ለሙያዊ እድገት በረኛ ሆነው ያገለግላሉ።

በሪፖርቱ መሰረት ወጣት ክርስቲያን አትሌቶች ውድቅ የተደረጉት አሰልጣኞች ስማቸው ክርስቲያን መሆኑን ካወቁ በሁዋላ፣ በሚታዩ የመስቀል ንቅሳት ምክንያት ከውድድሩ ውጪ የተደረጉ፣ ክርስቲያናዊ ማንነታቸውን እንዲደብቁ ወይም እንዲቀይሩ ግፊት ሲደረግባቸው፣ አልፎ ተርፎም በሙያዊ ደረጃ ለመራመድ ሲሉ የሙስሊም ስሞችን እንዲቀበሉ በመጠየቃቸው ነው። አንዳንድ ከፍተኛ ደረጃ ላይ የደረሱ ተጫዋቾች በእምነታቸው ምክንያት መገለላቸውን ጨምሮ ከቡድን አጋሮቻቸው የሚደርስባቸውን እንግልት ገልጸዋል። በኮፕት ክርስቲያን አትሌቶች ላይ ለሚደርሰው ሃይማኖታዊ መድልዎ በግብፅ ስፖርት በተለይም በእግር ኳስ ላይ የሚደርሰው መድልዎ እጅግ በጣም ብዙ ማስረጃዎች አሉ።

ታዋቂው የጥበብ ሀያሲ ታሪቅ አል-ሼናዊ በአምዱ ላይ በአል-መስሪ አል ዩም ጋዜጣ ላይ የኮፕቶች በእግር ኳስ ውስጥ ያለመኖር ምክንያቶችን አስመልክቶ ጥያቄ በማንሳት “የማይካደው እውነታ በእግር ኳስ ውስጥ የተለየ የኮፕቶች አለመገኘት አለ፣ የሙስሊም ቤተሰቦች ከአሁን በኋላ ልጆቻቸው ከኮፕት ክርስቲያን ጎረቤቶቻቸው ልጆች ጋር እግር ኳስ እንዲጫወቱ ለማድረግ ፈቃደኛ አይደሉምን?

በአሁኑ ጊዜ በግብፅ ብሔራዊ እግር ኳስ ቡድን ውስጥ የታወቁ ኮፕት ተጫዋቾች የሉም፣ የከፍተኛ ቡድን፣ የተጠባባቂ ቡድን ወይም የወጣት ብሄራዊ ቡድኖችን ጨምሮ። በግብፅ ብዙ የክርስትና እምነት ተከታዮች ቢኖሩም ይህ ለዓመታት ታይቷል።

የጥንቶቹ ግብፃውያን ዘሮች፣ ኮፕቶች በትውልድ አገራቸው ለብዙ ሺህ ዓመታት ኖረዋል። ቅዱስ ማርቆስ ወንጌልን ወደ ግብፅ ካመጣ በኋላ ኮፕቶች የመጀመሪያዎቹ የክርስትና ተከታዮች ሆኑ። በመካከለኛው ምስራቅ ውስጥ ትልቁ ክርስቲያን እና ትልቁ ሙስሊም ያልሆኑ ማህበረሰብ ናቸው።

በሰባተኛው ክፍለ ዘመን ሙስሊም አረቦች ወረራ እስኪያያዙ ድረስ ግብፅ በብዛት ክርስቲያን ነበረች። ኮፕቶች ከመጀመሪያው የአረብ ወረራ በኦቶማን ቱርኮች ላይ ከደረሰባቸው የዘመናት ስደት ተርፈዋል። በማሰቃየት፣ በእስር፣ ሊቋቋሙት በማይችል ግብር፣ በረሃብ እና በጭካኔ ወደ እስልምና እንዲገቡ ለማድረግ ባሰቡ ገዥዎች ቁጥር ስፍር የሌላቸውን ህይወታቸውን አጥተዋል።

ከብዙ መቶ ዓመታት በኋላ፣ የግብፅ መንግስት እና የሙስሊም ማህበረሰብ አሁንም ኮፕቶችን ስልታዊ መድልዎ ያደርሱባቸዋል።

ከአስር በመቶ/10% በላይ ህዝብ ያቀፈው ማህበረሰብ በከፍተኛ የእግር ኳስ ደረጃ ዜሮ ውክልና እንዲኖረው በስታቲስቲካዊ መልኩ የማይቻል ነው፣ ስልታዊ የሆነ ማግለል እስካልሆነ ድረስ። የግብፅ የዓለም ዋንጫ እና የኦሎምፒክ ልዑካን በታሪክ ምንም ኮፕቶች ወይም ቢበዛ አንድ ማስመሰያ አትሌት ያካተቱበት ዓለም አቀፍ ውድድሮች ላይ ተመሳሳይ ንድፍ ተዘርግቷል።

⚽ In Egypt, Football Is Everything, Unless You're Christian.

As millions around the world watch the FIFA World Cup this summer, a video of the Egyptian team that circulated on social media drew attention: In it, Egypt’s national team gathered in a group Islamic prayer before its match. It was not just a moment of prayer; it was also a moment that starkly illustrates the exclusion of Egyptians who do not share the Muslim faith, particularly Christians.

Despite making up a significant portion of Egypt’s population, Copts, the indigenous Christians of Egypt, have virtually no representation in Egypt’s top football clubs, and zero representation on the national team.

The organization Coptic Solidarity has been seeking to end this virtual sports apartheid in Egypt since it first filed formal complaints with FIFA and the International Olympic Committee in 2016. The organization has since pressured global sports bodies to uphold their own anti-discrimination standards.

Yet despite years of discrimination, young Copts continue to face barriers based not on ability, discipline, or merit, but solely because of their Christian faith.

Egypt has multiple professional national sports leagues, including football, basketball, volleyball, handball, and other Olympic sports federations. However, despite Coptic Christians making up an estimated 10–15% of Egypt’s population, they are almost entirely absent from elite professional sports.

The 2018 Coptic Solidarity report “Discrimination Against Copts in Egyptian Sports Clubs” documented how Coptic athletes are routinely excluded from elite development programs and professional opportunities. Some reported being pressured to conceal their Christian identity — or even change their names — simply for the chance to advance in their careers.

The report further documented that among roughly 540 players in Egypt’s top-flight football leagues, there was only one known Coptic player, and historically fewer than a dozen Coptic footballers have reached first-division clubs over the past several decades. Similar patterns of exclusion have been observed across other professional sports and Olympic delegations.

Discrimination often begins at the youth level, where coaches and club officials act as gatekeepers to professional advancement.

According to the report, young Christian athletes were rejected after coaches learned their names were Christian, excluded because of visible cross tattoos, pressured to hide or change their Christian identity, or even asked to adopt Muslim names in order to advance professionally. Some players who reached higher levels reported harassment from teammates, including being ostracized because of their faith. There is overwhelming evidence that religious discrimination against Coptic athletes is systemic in Egyptian sports, particularly football.

The famous art critic Tariq al-Shennawi raised a question in his column at Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper about the reasons for Coptic absence in soccer, stating, “The undeniable fact is that there is a distinct Coptic absence in soccer. Are Muslim families no longer willing to let their children play soccer with the children of their Coptic neighbors?

There are currently no known Coptic players on Egypt’s national football team, including the senior squad, reserve team, or youth national teams. This has been the case for years despite Egypt’s large Christian minority population.

The descendants of ancient Egyptians, Copts have lived in their homeland for several millennia. Copts became some of the earliest followers of Christianity after St. Mark brought the Gospel to Egypt. They are the largest Christian and largest non-Muslim community in the Middle East.

Egypt was predominantly Christian until Muslim Arabs invaded and took over in the seventh century. Copts have survived centuries of persecution since the first Arab invasion to the Ottoman Turks. They lost countless lives to rulers that were intent on forcing them to convert to Islam through torture, imprisonment, unbearable taxation, starvation, and cruelty.

Centuries later, the Egyptian government and Muslim society still subject Copts to systematic discrimination.

It is statistically implausible for a community comprising over 10% of the population to have virtually zero representation at the highest levels of football, unless systematic exclusion is taking place. The same pattern has extended to international competitions, where Egypt’s World Cup and Olympic delegations have historically included either no Copts or, at most, one token athlete.

Lindsay Rodriguez, the Director of Development and Advocacy of Coptic Solidarity, told me:

The result is what many describe as a pipeline of exclusion: talented Coptic children are filtered out early, ensuring they never reach professional clubs or the national team.

This pattern reflects broader religious discrimination in Egyptian society and the increasing Islamization of public institutions, including sports.

International sporting bodies such as FIFA and the International Olympic Committee have both the authority and responsibility to address discrimination within member organizations. Silence allows discrimination to continue unchecked.

Coptic Solidarity has urged these organizations to launch independent investigations into religious discrimination in Egyptian sports, require Egypt to establish transparent reporting mechanisms for athletes facing discrimination, remove religion-based barriers in club registration processes, and enforce anti-discrimination standards as a condition for participation in international competitions.

Historically, international pressure has played an important role in ending discrimination in sport globally, including racial segregation in South Africa. The same principle should apply here: Egypt should not be allowed to benefit from the prestige of international competition while systematically excluding Christian athletes from equal participation.
