President Emmanuel Macron said it was out of line for Charles
Kushner, the U.S. ambassador to France and the father of President
Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, to publicly accuse him of taking
insufficient action to combat antisemitism, and for him to link
France’s foreign policy positions to domestic incidents of violence
against Jews in France.
In a letter he
published in the Wall Street Journal to Macron in August, Kushner
wrote that he had ‘deep concern over the dramatic rise of
antisemitism in France and the lack of sufficient action by your
government to confront it’.
‘Public
statements haranguing Israel and gestures toward recognition of a
Palestinian state embolden extremists, fuel violence, and endanger
Jewish life in France’, he wrote, urging Macron to ‘enforce
hate-crime laws without exception; ensure the safety of Jewish
schools, synagogues and businesses, prosecute offenders to the
fullest extent; and abandon steps that give legitimacy to Hamas and
its allies’.”
Macron argued
that a one of his ambassadors would never be allowed to such public
remarks about another country ‘because it would risk diplomacy with
those nations’.
“’So,
either you are a person who wants to express freely’, Macron said.
‘If you are a diplomat, you have to follow the rule of diplomacy. …
The [American] taxpayer money is not properly used to finance this
kind of statement’.
France’s
foreign ministry summoned the ambassador last month in a formal
rebuke. The French ministry said Kushner’s claims ‘run counter to
international law’, citing the ‘obligation not to interfere in
the internal affairs of states in the 1961 Vienna Convention of
Diplomatic Relations’.”

baptismal name was Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci.
Elected in 1878, he was the 256th occupant of the throne of St Peter
and led the Catholic Church until his death in 1903.
He is remembered as a pope who was dedicated to social policies and
social justice.
He is particularly known for issuing an encyclical - a letter sent to
bishops of the Church - called "Rerum Novarum", a Latin
expression which means "Of New Things".
The encyclical included topics such as workers' rights and social
justice.
Pope Leo XIII, an Italian, played a role in the aftermath of the
First Italo-Ethiopian War, specifically after the decisive Battle of
Adwa in 1896. Following the battle, the Pope sent a special envoy to
Emperor Menelik II to negotiate the release of Italian prisoners of
war.
The Context:
The First Italo-Ethiopian War resulted in a significant Italian
defeat at the Battle of Adwa, where the Ethiopian army decisively
defeated Italian forces.

colonization of Ethiopia, since it was a christian nation?
Some context: Leo XIII was Pope from 1878 till 1903. Italian forrays
into Ethiopia started 1887, with a complicated war, in which Italy
gained Eritrea.
• What if Leo XIII was suspicious of what the Italians had in plan
for Ethiopia and enacted an edict, which would make the Catholic
Church shun any attempt at colonizing
Ethiopia, calling them sinful?
Pope Leo XIII, the head of the Roman Catholic Church at the time,
took an interest in the fate of Italian prisoners of war captured by
Ethiopia after the battle.
Negotiations
and Release:
The Pope sent a special envoy to Emperor Menelik II to negotiate the
release of the prisoners. Emperor Menelik, in a gesture of respect to
the Pope, released some prisoners, including a seriously ill
individual, along with the envoy back to Italy.
The year 1896 was a crucial year for Europe as a whole, and for Italy
in particular. In that year, Italy was defeated by Ethiopia at the
Battle of Adwa, signaling the end of the “might is right” era
assumed by the European powers of the day. The defeat of the Italians
was a major blow to the industrial world because it heralded the
beginning of resistance against the industrial powers and the
struggle for independence by the colonized African nations. In the
painting shown here, St. George appears at the very apex, a reference
to the proverbial Ethiopian belief that the Italians were defeated
thanks to divine intervention. The drums used to herald the
coronation of the King of Kings here become the battle drum that
reverberates through the hills of Adwa, shaking the morale of the
enemy.
In the aftermath of the war, Pope Leo XIII and King Menelik II
exchanged letters to effect the release of Italian Prisoners of War,
and the Vatican turned to the Church of Alexandria for help with
mediation. Trade cards of the day reflect current event in brightly
colored images. Here we see Monsignor Macaire of the vicar of the
Egyptian Coptic Church approaching Emperor Menelik on behalf of the
Pope of Rome; a prudent example of religious diplomacy since the
King of Kings and Monsignor Macaire both belonged to the Orthodox
faith.
Negotiations between the two dignitaries bore results. On November
20, 1896, the Emperor released 200 Italian POWs in honor of the Queen
of Italy’s birthday, and successive releases were effected in
February and June of 1897, when the last of the Italian POWs left the
country.
