Fire and explosion at Colleferro, in the facility of the former Simmel Difesa, currently owned by KNDS Ammo Italy. The company, located in the Quarto Chilometro area, along via Latina, between Colleferro and Artena, produces medium- and large-caliber ammunition for land and naval defense, as well as solid fuels for aerospace launch vehicles.
The incident is said to have occurred in the powder pressing department. A loud boom was distinctly heard by residents in the area, triggering the alarm.
KNDS Ammo Italy traces its corporate roots back over a century to historic Italian defense firms, notably Bombrini Parodi Delfino (BPD) founded in 1912. During Benito Mussolini's fascist regime (1922–1943), BPD’s manufacturing plants in Colleferro became crucial state-backed suppliers of gunpowder, explosives, and war materials for the Royal Italian Armed Forces.
Benito Mussolini launched the Second Italo-Ethiopian War in October 1935 to build a fascist empire and avenge Italy's 1896 defeat at Adwa. The Italian military heavily relied on mass artillery, extensive aerial bombing, and banned chemical weapons like mustard gas to overwhelm Ethiopian forces, capturing Addis Ababa by May 1936.
