66 Years ago history was made in the 1960 Rome Olympics Marathon,
On the eve of 9/11 (Ethiopian New Year's Day) – on the same day that Argentina’s Juan Zabala won 1932 Olympic marathon gold at the Los Angeles Games.
When Abebe Bikila – running barefoot – became the first black African to win an Olympic marathon gold medal on the streets of Rome, it was without doubt one of the most iconic moments of the 1960 Games.
Inspired by the Obelisk of Axum
After leaving the ancient Appian Way at 40km, the race for gold finally unravelled. First Abdesselem surged but Bikila responded. Then at about 500m from the finish, the Ethiopian made the decisive strike at the Piazza di Porta Capena.
As was explained later, there was a delicious irony at Bikila attacking at this point because the square contained the Obelisco di Axum, which had been brought back from Ethiopia by the Italians following their invasion of the East African nation in 1936.
Identifying the monument, he lengthened his stride and moved clear of Abdesselem, although in the final 60 metres the Ethiopian had one final obstacle to overcome as he had to deftly negotiate an errant motor scooter which has made its way on the course.
Bikila breasted the finish line at the Arch of Constantine in a world and Olympic record of 2:15:16.2 – trimming 0.8 from Popov’s world record. The courageous Abdesselam finished some 25 seconds behind to bank a richly deserved silver with Magee taking bronze.
The Axum Obelisk in Ethiopia is an ancient, 1,700-year-old stone tomb marker carved from a single piece of granite. In contrast, the reinforced-concrete Buenos Aires Obelisk in Argentina is a modern, 67.5-meter (221-foot) civic monument built in 1936.
One of the Obelisks of Axum was looted from Ethiopia in 1937 on the direct orders of fascist Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. Following a decades-long diplomatic dispute, Italy fully dismantled and returned the monument to Ethiopia in 2005.

Former Argentine President Juan Perón openly admired Italy's Benito Mussolini. Perón adopted many of Mussolini's political traits, making Italian fascism a massive influence on Argentine politics.
Following World War II, a significant number of Italian fascists and Nazi collaborators fled to Argentina to escape prosecution. Facilitated by the "ratlines" escape routes and aided by President Juan Perón’s sympathetic government, they were often supplied with forged Red Cross passports and visas, finding refuge within the country's large, established Italian community.
Key facilitators, specific figures, and historical networks defined this migration:
Escape Networks: The Simon Wiesenthal Center documents how these networks—often referred to as ratlines—relied on sympathetic Catholic clergy, Swiss banks, and transit points in Spain and Italy.
The Argentine Connection: President Juan Perón, who had served as a military attaché in Benito Mussolini's Italy in the 1930s, actively established an information bureau to facilitate entry for former fascists. His government provided safe haven for Axis loyalists across Europe.
Notable Exiles: In addition to high-profile German Nazis like Adolf Eichmann and Josef Mengele, prominent Italian fascists and officials fled to Argentina to evade the post-war trials in Italy.
The migration was part of a broader Latin American haven for former Axis powers, with routes funded partially through the laundering of looted assets and supported by sympathetic diplomats and officials.

It is important to note that Peron publicly admired Mussolini. His support for Mussolini is well documented and during a trip to Europe in 1938 he stated:
“Italian Fascism made people’s organizations participate more on the country’s political stage. Before Mussolini’s rise to power, the state was separated from the workers, and the former had no involvement in the latter. […] Exactly the same process happened in Germany, that is the state was organized [to serve] for a perfectly structured community, for a perfectly structured population: a community where the state was the tool of the people, whose representation was, in my opinion, effective.” – Juan Perón
