This was not an isolated incident, but part of a disturbing pattern of targeted attacks against the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and its followers.

These attacks reflect a broader pattern of violence in which Orthodox Christians have been targeted, often amid the dangerous conflation of Orthodox Christian identity with Amhara ethnicity by ethnic Oromo attackers.

Such acts of violence against innocent civilians and their religious institutions must be condemned, and those responsible must be held accountable.

👹 Galla-Oromo Invasion of Christian Ethiopia and Its Associated Genocide

Ethiopia's tumultuous history has been marked by numerous periods of turmoil and destruction, three of which stand out for their enduring damaging impact. The first is from 1527 to 1543 (Richard Pankhurst, 1998), known as Ahmed Ibrahim's Invasion and War of Destruction, followed by the subsequent Galla-Oromo Migration towards the Bale Mountains in the southern borders of historical Ethiopia. The second significant episode was "Yodit Gudit's" destruction of the later 10th century. The third was the Edomite Italian Roman invasion in the 19th Century and the occupation of destruction of Ethiopia by Fascist Italy (revenge for the complesso di Adua (Adwa complex) that lasted from 1939 to 1945. All events specifically targeted Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, its heritage, monuments, properties, and institutions. Because of accidental cultural overlap with mainstream Ethiopian cultures, Northern Ethiopians paid/ are paying dearly.
