A landslide
Monday triggered by heavy rainfall in Ethiopia’s Amhara region
killed 14 people and injured seven others, while an unknown number of
people remain unaccounted for as search and rescue efforts continue.
The landslide
occurred at Tsadqane Debre Mitmaq St. Mary Monastery, where hundreds
of worshipers had gathered for a holy water cleansing ritual that is
popular among people seeking spiritual healing for chronic illnesses.
“The disaster
occurred at approximately 7 a.m., and many of those who died had
gathered to receive the holy water,” Megabe Hadis Neka Tibeb Ababu,
the diocese’s general manager, told The Associated Press.
He said an
unknown number of people are still believed to be trapped beneath the
debris.
“Of the dead,
11 have already been buried at the monastery, while the remains of
the others were sent to their hometowns,” he said, adding that it
remained difficult to identify some of the victims.
Those who
sustained serious injuries were taken to Debre Birhan, the capital of
North Shewa Administrative Zone, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from
the monastery.
The landslide
occurred near a mountain, where massive rocks broke loose and crashed
onto the worshippers, worsening the disaster.
A team of
experts from the local disaster prevention office has been deployed
to assist search and rescue operations, the local administration’s
communications office said in a statement.
Mudslides and
flooding caused by heavy rainfall have become increasingly common in
Ethiopia, particularly during the rainy season, locally known as
Kiremt, which typically runs from June to September.
In July 2024, a
deadly mudslide triggered by heavy rains killed at least 257 people
in southern Ethiopia. Earlier this year, more than 100 people also
died in a similar mudslide in Gamo, in southern Ethiopia.

events linked to climate change. Poor infrastructure, particularly in
rural areas, has left many communities highly vulnerable to flooding,
landslides, and recurring droughts, with limited capacity to respond

region, was severely damaged in a drone attack on July 22, 2026.

faithful of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church who were at the
monastery to participate in the liturgy.
According to
several local sources, two nuns and six priests and religious members
lost their lives. Numerous civilians and worshippers present at the
site were also injured.
For many
Ethiopian Christians, this tragedy represents far more than the loss
of human lives: it has shaken the sense of security associated with
places that have always been considered sacred. “Our churches and
monasteries have always been places where people come to seek God,
pray, and find peace,” an Ethiopian pastor said, describing the
climate of fear that has spread among Christian communities.
“When a place
of worship becomes a place of death, the faithful begin to ask
themselves where they can gather safely,” reads a statement
released on social media. “Whether the target was armed fighters or
not, those who lost their lives were worshippers, priests, and nuns.
Families have lost their loved ones and the Church is mourning.
Innocent people should never pay the price of war.”
The attack
occurred in the context of the ongoing conflict between Ethiopian
government forces and fighters from the Fano militia in the Amhara
region. The government has claimed that the militia members were
using the monastery as a shelter.
The
priestquoted on social
media statements explained that the incident has intensified fears
among many faithful about attending religious celebrations,
especially in areas affected by the conflict.
“Many people
are living in fear and are afraid to gather for worship,” he said.
“Parents are asking themselves whether it is still safe to bring
their children to church, because they fear that what happened at
Arsema monastery could happen elsewhere. This is a fear we never
wanted to see among our people. We spend our days comforting those
who ask why all this has happened. We do not always have answers, but

witness to its faith and calls on Christians around the world to
